A relation of mine flew LGW to MSP lon NW043 last Sunday but the plane had
to turn back over the Atlantic and land at Schipol. The relation was put up
in a hotel overnight and flew onto MSP the next morning. Why would the plane
return to Schipol rather than return to Gatwick or, if there was an
emergency why didnt it make arrangements to land at Shannon or Prestwick?

Can anyone verify what the "mechanical problem" was?

Did he get offered monetary compensation in accordance with the new EU
Regulations?

Northwest has an alliance with KLM and has a major hub in Amsterdam. So
they probably had an easier time with arrangements for the passengers
turning back to AMS rather than going back to London.
