This summer we are looking to travel in North Carolina - from the
mountains to Cape Hatteras. Summer months are always crowded but is
there a time in June, July or August that may not be as crowded or are
there times when these areas may be 'extra' crowded due to planned
events. Any suggestions on where to stay at near the mountains and/or
Cape Hatteras? Thank you.

The mountains to Hatteras! That's a loooong way.

Avoid the 4th of July naturally (I assume you are American?), Memorial Day,
and Labor Day. Southern schools tend to get out in late May and start again
mid-late August, while Northern schools tend to get out later in June and
start after Labor Day. In general, June is less crowded, but the beaches
won't be as warm.

There are so many options around the mountains - what do you like? Asheville
is a great area for crafts and day trips; if you can afford it stay at the
Grove Park Inn. I can't speak for the NC beach areas, as it has been a
while.

Thank you for the information. It is a loooong way but I love
N.Carolina. We have 2 girls (grade school age) who like the sand and
water but not the crowds.

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree
Indeed, unless the billboards fall
I'll never see a tree at all.

Any time in summer is going to be busy at the coast, but as crowds go
Hatteras, in particular the National Seashore, will be less so than the more
commercialized areas. You don't say how long you expect to stay, but there
area many beach house rentals in the towns of Avon, Rodanthe, Wave, Buxton,
or Hatteras, as well as many reasonably priced hotels. These towns are
surrounded by the totally undeveloped National Seashore, so a short drive to
about any of the parking turn-outs along route 12 and you will be on
deserted beaches. Even the beach areas in the towns are part of the
National Seashore, so you are free to cross over the dunes at any public
access point and walk the beaches.

There are lots of good local restaurants in the towns (but don't look for a
fast food place, thankfully they haven't spread south of Oregon Inlet!).
Climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, check out the many ranger-led programs
hosted by the National Park Service, many of them geared toward children,
but us old folks can learn a lot from them too!

A trip up to the northern beaches is nice for a change, but the Nags Head
and Kitty Hawk areas are much more crowded and commercial. But the Wright
Brother's Memorial is good if there is an interest in history, its fun to
climb Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the east coast. Over at
Manteo there is the Lost Colony outdoor drama, the longest running outdoor
drama in the US, also a nice lesson in the history of early European
settlers.

Try one of the Dolphin watching cruises around the Sound, they guarantee
you'll see Dolphins, and we've never been disappointed yet!
