Hi there,

Im' going to conference which is held at Las vegas in october. I have couple
day off's and I would like to spend them backpacking at Nevada's mountains.
Dou you have any tips what are best places for trekking and make excursions?
Grand canyon is one must see, but what about other places?

Thanks in advance.

Mt. Charleston and Red Rock Canyon are two possibilities close to Las
Vegas. Valley of Fire SP a little further away would also be suitable
for day hiking. Great Basin NP and Death Valley NP are further away.
Although not hiking, I enjoy the non-whitewater raft trip below Hoover
Dam for which you can find discount offers in the Las Vegas throw-away
publications.

Red Rock Canyon and the Valley of Fire are wonderful for that kind of
thing. If you have any further questions about Las Vegas or vicinity, I
suggest you post them on the alt.vacation.las-vegas newsgroup which is
very active.

Depending on when in October you go and how the fall shapes up, you
might be able to catch the changing aspen leaves at Great Basin
National Park. That, along with Lehman Caves and the Bristlecone pines
could keep you busy for a couple days up there.

Closer to Las Vegas are Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks in Utah.
Zion, in particular, offers the possibility of multi-day backpacking.
If you go too late for the aspen at Great Basin, either of these
locations are possiblities for leaf peeping.

Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, and Valley of Fire are definitely the
outdoor attractions closest to Las Vegas. But only Mount Charleston
really offers the possiblity of multi-day backpacking.

Multiple day backpacking is possible in Red Rock Canyon as the National
Conservation Area is quite large and also abuts the Humboldt-Toiyabe
National Forest in which Mt. Charleston lies. Both areas constitute
much of the Spring Mountains.

I didn't mention Bryce and Zion NP's because the OP mentioned Nevada,
but then also included the Grand Canyon. Cedar Breaks NM is also up
that way in Utah. I believe all three of these parks would be more
rewarding than the ones closer to Las Vegas, and could be included on a
nice loop with the Grand Canyon, and a short side trip to Antelope
Canyon near Page, AZ.
