Hi, I'm going to prague at the end of this month for a week and need
info on the pension there. I had my eyes on two pensions; Pension U.
Sv. Krystova in Praha 10 and B&B Cekalovskeho Sady in Praha 2. Which
one is better? I'm looking for a cozy and nice place, not necesseraly
has to be in the centre of the town, but easy+convinient to reach and
safe.

Your help is really needed.

Thanks,
maya

Don't know about those two, but I spent several days at Pension Holiday
Home (Americká 37, Prague 2) last July.

<http://www.holidayhome.cz/>

I had no complaints, and the folks there were quite helpful. Basic, but
clean. It's just a half-block or so off Namesti Miru, so there are easy
connections with the subway and trams. (In fact, it looked like they
were adding another subway entrance on Namesti Miru last summer.)

I think it ran close to ¤50, breakfast included.

Please describe breakfast.

That was eight or nine months ago, but ... It was the usual European
fare, not the American-style eggs, bacon, omlette, hash brown stuff.
Various breads and rolls, sliced meats, jams and spreads, some fruit,
IIRC. Coffee, juice, milk. I believe they had poached or boiled eggs.
It was a pretty good spread, though not as large or varied as you'd
find at the bigger hotels. (I found the breakfast spread at a Holiday
Inn Express near Frankfurt's airport among the largest of the trip,
though of the same European style.) It was decent and filling and
braced me for a morning of exploring Prague.

No problem, then. Wink

Well, yes, if it's enough to eat.

Just before going to Rome, an alleged B&B posted here claiming U$75
with "breakfast". We spent our first night there in sub-standard
accommodations. "Breakfast" consisted of a piece of cold toast
wrapped in cellophane, tiny tubs of jams and jellies, and weak
coffee. No juice or fruit.

We moved to a "hotel" on a lower floor in the same building to pay
U$50 for a very large room with an excellent television set, good
bathrooms, the use of a kitchen (we were invited to a meal) but no
breakfast. U$25 for toast and coffee? U$25 for toast and coffee at a
tiny table wedged in a hall between the reception desk and a wall,
being brushed by every passer-by!

Do you need to be central or can you be out in the sticks? We stayed
in the Tennis Hotel in Zbraslav a couple of years back. Incredibly
cheap, and the room was twin in a barracks style but comfortable and
en-suite (I suspect it used to be a training facility for Martina and
friends). Full breakfast was available in the dining room, although I
usually cooked my own in the room on a travelling hot-plate and
skillet.

Prices may have risen with the EU change - 560 kr RO or 620 with
breakfast from memory. That's about 20 euro.

Cheers, Alan, Australia

Ouch. Definitely a bad experience. Sorry to hear it.

But this place's spread was fine.

And I neglected to mention earlier that there were small kitchens
shared by a couple rooms. (May not be available in all rooms. I can't
recall.) I believe it included a microwave, as well.

At the moment, this is kinda idle chatter but, a few months ago,
there was a thread of glowing reports about Prague that so piqued my
interest that I'm strongly considering going there on m'way to (or
from) an August dance cruise on the Mediterranean.

The comments about Prague's food make it sound like a bad idea to do
one's own cooking.

We stayed in Pension Unitas in Prague, very close to the main square
and Charles Bridge. It's both a pension and a hostel, with the Pension
rooms on the upper floor and hostel rooms on the lower. We were very
pleased with it, given the price and the location. My wife and I (late
30s) felt quite at home here. Rooms were basic, and shower/WC were
shared, but we had no problems getting an open toilet or shower when we
wanted. The breakfast buffet was surprisingly good, with your basic
European breakfast spread (meats, cheeses, rools, muesli, yogurt,
etc.). Can't remember if there were eggs or not.

You can see a photo of our room on my Web site at
http://www.brianwasson.com/trips/czechtrip/day2.htm (in our trip report
about our bike trip to the Czech Republic).

If you can squeeze it into your schedule, I recommend Prague very
highly. As you've no doubt read here over the months, the reasons are
many.

(Dance cruise. That sounds interesting, too. I don't dance well, but I
try to make up that with enthusiasm. <g>)

That's true! Me, I don't travel for the enjoyment of eating my own
nuked food. Wink

And as of last summer, the Czech Republic was more than reasonably
priced, food-wise. Prague is filled with restaurants of all types. I
also traveled south of Prague to smaller cities and villages, and one
of my most memorable meals (partly because of a cat; no, not on the
menu <g>) was in a Romani-owned restaurant. Apetizer, main course,
desert, two glasses of wine and turkish coffee came to about $9 US. I
found prices about the same in many places in Prague. (Away from the
tourist places, of course.)

Looks and sounds like a wonderful trip, Brian. Nice photos and great
description.

I'm passing your link along to some friends.

Nah, my schedule don't squeeze nuttin'. The schedule is determined by
the destinations and the dates certain over which I have no control.

Yeah, you're guilty!

Dancing is the most fun thing I do. I do it often, well, and with
enthusiasm.
