We decided to have a "Strip Day" on our upcoming trip to Vegas and I
thought it would be nice to have a single day base of operations while
we are out there. We got a good deal on our room at MSS so I didn't
mind paying for an extra room.
I'd read several reviews of Priceline and the hotels they offer and at
what quality rating. The 4 star rating for north and south strip
includes the following hotels according to betterbidding.com: TI,
Planet Hollywood, Monte Carlo, Westin, Luxor, MGM and NYNY.
So I started at $35 and over the course of a week, increased my bid -
refusing to go any higher than $60 (which with tax comes to ~$73). I
"won".
Out of the seven hotels listed here, which would suit your fancy the
most/least? Why?
I'll reveal my "winning" location later on.

I've stayed at 5 of those 7 and would rank them as follows, from best
to worst:
1. Planet Hollywood (very nice rooms, good location, poker room and
buffet)
2. MGM (everything you want under one roof - great poker room and
restaurants)
3. TI (decent rooms, good north central location)
4. Monte Carlo (good location, but not much else)
5. Luxor (decent all around but nothing special)
6. NYNY (small rooms and cramped casino - no poker room)
7. Westin (not quite on the strip so the "strip experience" would be
diminished)

Just to respond to everyone thus far -
The risk in requesting a 4 star north or south strip resort obviously
lies in the chance that you could end up getting stuck in a room at
the Westin, which wouldn't be horrible but would be for all intents
and purposes, a bad break in this situation.
The other option was to request something in the 3-3.5 star range with
Priceline, which include the following properties - Barbary's Gambling
Hall, HOOTERS (boo) or the Riviera (boooooo). I know Hotwire offers
3-3.5 star hotels in the range of Harrah's, Ballys and Flamingo, but
the prices are substantially higher than Priceline's 4 star hotels.
My original hope was to snag a room at Planet Hollywood based purely
on location, but I was not fortunate enough to land that property. So
far Margaret has been the WARMEST... >> Stay informed about: Priceline Success...sorta |

I'll rank my opinion of these properties (bear in mind I have never
stayed at any, I am judging solely by casino and location)
1. TI
2. Planet Hollywood
3. Monte Carlo
4. MGM
5. NYNY
6. Luxor
7. Westin

Well, I am a fan of TI. I like the location, the vibe, and the ease of the
parking garage, and access to the mall. When I am paying I stay there (as
opposed to when my husband's job is paying, those cheap so and sos ).
After that I would say Planet Hollywood if they still have those big bath
tubs like Aladdin did.
Next would be MGM just because I haven't stayed there and I like green.
Probably Luxor next because I liked their casino even though I wasn't too
impressed with our room and I like being able to get to Mandalay Bay. I also
like the crazy bread at Little Caesars in Luxor's food court. What can I
say. I have a champagne budget and beer taste.
Monte Carlo. Never been in there so it would be an adventure!
I think NYNY would be next. I was never too impressed with the casino for
some reason
Umm. Westin isn't on the strip AFAIK. Sounds like a place those cheap bean
counters where my husband works would put us.
My guess is you got Monte Carlo because they were having a hot sale!

Of the hotels listed, I've only stayed at PH, a couple years ago when
it was still Aladdin. It was pretty good for the $49 deal at the time.
I'd go there, or TI if I wanted to be located farther north. Maybe
even Luxor to enjoy the novelty of a pyramid room once.
It's a bit of a stretch if Priceline is calling the Westin a Strip
hotel, seeing as how it's about a half-mile off the Strip at Koval.

Just basing my choices on geography:
The least would be The Westin because it is not on the strip.
The two hotels that would best suit mewould be those closest to the
Strip's center--TI or Planet Hollywood.

MGM is always top of that list. Stayed at Planet HO... never again, and
just at Luxor which was very run down.

My thoughts on Priceline is what do they call a 4 star
propert? Are they using the Mobile guide? or the
My Secret Vegas guide?
As with any consolidator, sometimes they sell one star
rooms in four star hotels. Like a mountain view looking
over the top floor of the parking garage, or a garden
room looking over the dumpster with an early morning,
5 am, wakeup call courtesy of the garbage trucks rolling
past your room.

Of your list, I would pick MGM, if location isn't too big of a concern
for you. The way they re-did the MGM is awesome. Tons of nightclubs,
bars, lounges and good food. The rooms ain't that bad either.
TI would be next. A great hotel with great rooms and entertainment.
Not too big, not too small... just right in size. And it has the
absolute best location on the Strip as it is at the center of
everything - shopping at the Fashion Show Mall, Forum Shops & Canals
at the 'V', next to nearly every major casino, and it's only minutes
away from downtown and the sleazy no-man's land between the Strat and
downtown.
How could you go wrong?
NY/NY is too noisy, the Monte Carlo nickled and dimed me to a near BK
last time I was there, Planet Hollywood.... eh... Luxor is nice but
too far down on the Strip, and who the hell would stay at the Westin?

Well I had no delusions about the hotels available at the rating. In
terms of Vegas I think it's fair to call most of those properties 4
star, assuming you're working on a 5 star system. Obviously they are
a class below Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, Mandalay and Palazzo. There
is probably an argument that all of the "4 star" properties are not
comparable, but they have to group them somehow.
In terms of what type of room one can expect, I'd expect the room
assignment to be completely random as I assume it is when a room is
booked through expedia, travelocity or even the hotel's website.
Perhaps this is naive. >> Stay informed about: Priceline Success...sorta |

You know I haven't read anything about that but I'm inclined to think
that it would not matter how you booked the room. I think the $20
trick is a completely independent event - nothing more than a bribe to
convince the desk to upgrade your room at a loss to the hotel. Again,
maybe this is something I'm totally wrong about. >> Stay informed about: Priceline Success...sorta |

Have you read anything about people using the $20 trick when booking thru
priceline? Can you get an upgraded room or at least a decent location in
the hotel?

A little over a year ago I used Priceline for 1 night when I couldn't
get a cheap room using my rating cards. I chose the South Strip and
picked the cheapest rating (3 Stars?) that included a spa & casino
figuring the worst I could get was Tropicana. I wond up with Excalibur.
Not a great property but not a bad one either. Clean, renovated room.
Pool full of kids. It did the job. >> Stay informed about: Priceline Success...sorta |
