I'm traveling to Fiji for two weeks in March and am wondering where I
can go to get away from the partiers, package tourists, and the
wealthy. Don't do hostels these days, but I am on a budget.
My interests are hiking, reading, getting to know a bit of the local
culture, and hanging out in sleepy rural areas. I don't care much for
sitting on beaches or whooping it up. In Bali, I love the outskirts of
Ubud (e.g. Campuan) in the off-season (e.g. say, late September) where
prices are low, tourists are few, and there isn't much nightlife to
speak of. I avoid nightmarishly garish, high-hassle places like Kuta
Beach dominated by tourists drinking themselves into oblivion.
Basically, I want to be where the lager louts aren't. Less action =
fabulous.
Are there any places in Fiji similar to Ubud/Campuan? I tend to enjoy
heading for one community in a place, kicking back and getting to know
the place and its culture. I love off-season travel and am hoping
prices, as well as the pace of life, will be a bit slower in March. Is
it possible to find good (good meaning modest / few luxuries, but
clean and quiet), private (no hostels please) accomodations for around
FJD $34 a night in many places?
Finally, my flight arrives at Nadi Airport in the wee hours of the
morning, around 3am; are there any reasonably priced, safe
accomodations close to the airport? If I had any choice in the matter,
I'd arrive around 8am, get transport out of town and find cheaper
accomodations. Not sure whether I should stick close to the airport
until daylight and then get transport elsewhere. I've heard Nadi can
be rather dangerous at night, and I'm worried about the hassle of
arriving at 3am.
Thanks very much.

No ideas here? Is there a better newsgroup to post my questions to?
Thanks.

Sounds like you want the Rakiraki hotel. It is about 2 hrs drive from Nadi.
I was back there in December, and worked in Fiji for thirteen years. The
hotel manager is a friend of mine. Local rates at the time was F$69 per
night, but he can do it cheaper.
There is lots of low cost accomodation in Nadi, but you get what you pay
for.
If your budget is really tight, you can try the Tavua hotel, about 1 1/2
hours drive from Nadi. They only have two air conditioned rooms, and several
with fans.
