I'm going to be in the Cairns area for about a week (Sunday-Friday
morning) next month. I'm thinking about renting a campervan to be
more flexible. Can I just pull it over to the side of the road and
park or do I have to go to a "holiday park"? How well do they drive?
Will this end up being less expensive than renting a car and motel
rooms? I'm planning on spending a day or two on the reef (probably
out of Port Douglas) and spending some time going to the Atherton
Tablelands as well. I'll be traveling alone, so what's a good model?

Thanks!

Sarah

It sounds like a good idea to me, most are as easy to drive as a
car.

I admit I don't know current regulations, but when my wife and I
were in the area years ago the state government discouraged just
pulling off a mostly deserted highway to park.

When I was there, it was very cheap to park in a caravan or
tourist park overnight as long as you were using your own
vehicle, didn't need to connect to power, etc.

Not only a safe place to stay, but have access to toilets,
showers, clothes washing facilities.

Would certainly think so, but you could always get an idea from
the net, send an email to Atherton council and ask them, etc.

Depends on how much luxury you want! Seriously, if I was coming
to Australia and traveling alone for a week, would probably just
rent the cheapest standard car to keep down the petrol charges.

Would sleep on the back seat. Wouldn't feel any need for
multiple berths, cooking arrangements, etc. Probably would stay
overnight at caravan park to make use of toilet, shower, washing
machine. Queensland has a large variety of tropical fruit,
usually very cheap, farmers have roadside stands, most towns
have fruit and veggie shops. Should be plenty of small cafes,
truck stops, etc.

Buy a cheap foam cooler, toss in a bag of ice, keep butter, cold
drinks, and other perishables inside. A loaf of bread, some
cheese or peanut butter, salt, etc. and you can eat very cheaply
for a week.

Cheers,

"Should" but didnt. We tried Big W, Target, Woolworth and many others
including a few Chickenfeed stores..
We finally had to buy a square nylon covered 1/2" thick "soft sider" type
foam cooler with shoulder strap for $ 20.00 !

Most of the shops didnt even inderstand what a "cooler" was.. After much
gesturing and drawing, one store clerk finally said: Oh, you want an
"Eskie"
The regular foam coolers or "Eskies" over here in North America are about 5
dollars.

Over here, we have what are known as "Dollar Stores" where they sell all
manner of cheap Chinese junk..but for a dollar, a fly swatter is a good
investment. We tried probably in excess of a dozen various shops in OZ
including those above and no swatters. I thought maybe I wasnt getting the
name right so in a Sporting/camping shop in Bundy, I approached 2 clerks
and asked: Are Flies your National Bird and "protected" by Law ?

They were puzzled so I pantomimed a "fly" buzzing around and finally
landing.. Then I went "Wham Wham Wham". waving my right arm like a
swatter.. I then pointed to the imaginary swatter and said: I want one of
"those"..They looked at each other as the "light bulb" went 'on' above their
heads..then said: "Right ! We don't have those" They are a common
'staple' over here in campgrounds or camping supplies shops but alas, not
there. Nextime we come over, I'll bring a few hundred in my baggage and
sell em for $ 2.00 Wink

I don't think a campervan is what you need, certainly, I don't know where
you come from but would you just pull over to the side of the road in your
country? don't even consider doing that, it isn't safe or sensible. Just
hire a small car from a hire company like Budget (check the net for deals),
all the small hire cars have air con and are automatic. OR---- stay in
Cairns and simply go on the tours, let someone else drive, there are heaps
of tours, to the reef and into the hinterland just google tours cairns.
Cairns is a lovely spot BUT it is tropical so be well prepared for HOT &
HUMID the climate takes no prisoners, you have been warned.

Man, have you got a problem with your eyes.I dont think there would be a
servo or shop that wouldnt sell a cooler.

We use insect spray. To many of the buggers to try and hit, but I would bet
if I wanted a fly swatter Big W stores would sell them.
