Budget airline Ryanair has announced a new base at Birmingham International
Airport.

Twenty-two destinations will be available from the airport as a result of a
deal which was finalised late on Monday evening.

Two aircraft. Wow. That'll be fun when one goes tech Sad

Nice to see an increase in the number of routes, though; although
Stockholm's the only one of those I think I might ever use.

I see they have Birmingham on their website already.

That'll be the same website that took months to get changed to show
fares that include tax Smile

I doubt that it will be any different to any other FR operation. They fly
their planes intensively, so there's no slack if one breaks.

They plan to have 10 planes, to 22 destinations so that's an average of 1.5
journeys to each, per day. Personally, an airport would have to be very
convenient for me to risk a once a day opeartion, if I had an alternative
choice.

I really liked the line about the 350 million pound investment in the
airport. How much of that is the 2 check in desks and a couple of
maintenance staff? The bulk of that must be the cost of the planes. How is
that an investment in an airport? If the services don't work out they can
move the planes elsewhere at zero loss.

Have they done that yet?

It was just the thought of them having to cancel half their flights!

Although servicing 22 destinations, with no more than perhaps eight
flights a day with two planes, the average frequency per destination
looks like once every three days. The excitement abates a little. (I
haven't looked at their timetables to verify these assumptions).

Once they have all 10 planes. Are they planning on only serving 4
destinations to start off with?

Agreed, on these short-haul routes the minimum someone flying on
business needs is at least one flight at dawn, and another some time
early evening.

Although we can perhaps be too fussy... there was a period where I was
flying somewhere with one flight a week, which turned into two a week.
But that was better than the other ways of getting there (instead of a
direct flight, two separate flights plus a two-hour bus - daily, but it
took all day each way). And yes, inside the EU.

Don't they lease them? This is like Branson saying he's spent billions
investing in new trains, when the money has actually been invested by a
ROSCO.

The home page claims the flight prices are now including tax and fees.
But as they start at £5, it seems to good to be true. My next low-cost
flight with BMI Baby has outbound "taxes and charges" of £16.95, inbound
£19.95.

I would guess so, but don't know

I think that FR have a closer relationship with whoever finances their
planes than a ROSCO. Molly certainly negotiates the price with Boeing
personally.

I thought they didn't do their own ground handling but sub contracted it out.

If I'm right the handling company probably just had to invest in a few
Ryanair signs.

I thought Roland was talking about the planes.

But I also think that you are right
