I am trying to choose a San Francisco hotel for a visit in August. Many
of my top choices don't feature air conditioning. I know SF to be a
pretty cool and breezy place most of the time, but I also recall one
early September trip where the temperature downtown hit 95 degrees.
What should I expect in mid-August?

September is usually hotter than August in SF. There is less chance of
fog in September. It could get hot, but it's not likely.

Temperatures in SF vary a lot, mostly depending on how close you are to the
bay or ocean. Coastal areas tend to be foggy and cool during the summer.
Inland areas can be warmer, though 90F is extremely rare (maybe a couple of
days every few years) within the city limits.

Most of the large hotels have AC. They may not mention it, but is how they
get ventilation in a multi-story, lotsa rooms hotel. The smaller boutique
hotels may not have AC. Will not be a problem. Even if it gets hot during
the day, it will cool off in the evening. Will be a very pleasant
temperature. August can be one of the cooler months. The inland valley
gets to the 100+ temps and the onshore breeze caused by the rising valley
air, brings in the offshore fog bank. I live inland about 40 miles from SF,
and remember a 106 day in Walnut Creek, and we had been clamming on the
Marin county coast in about 50 degree temps.

I assume the "inland valley" you mention is other cities like Sacramento, not
the inland parts of San Francisco.

Uh, no. Places like Concord and Walnut Creek and Dublin, all on
BART, can get into the 100s fairly often, even when it's 65 in
downtown SF.

Yes, the area beyond the East Bay hills. I am in the Livermore Valley,
which is about 40 miles from SF. Will get 100 during the day, but the fog
and bay cool it off at night. The next range of hills, puts you into the
Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.

WC and Concord are not inland parts of SF.

I didn't say they were. I was addressing the apparent claim that
the heat was clear over in Sacramento.

I have no idea what the inland parts of San Francisco would be.
Eureka Valley, or the Mission District? I get the impression he
means the inland parts of the Bay Area, not of SF proper.

In August you are more likley to need heating than AC, when that fog
rolls in it can get downright cold.

That is a strange feature of SF. Aug. can easily be chillier than other
months.

Mid-September into November are San Francisco's summer. That's
the time of year when the wind shifts and stops coming off the
cold Pacific Ocean and begins to come from the deserts to the
east.

They are inland valleys. Livermore, Dublin, Pleasanton are know as the
Tri-valley.
