Small change in Egypt

We are planning a trip to Egypt in March. I have read much about the
problems getting small change for tips and recently came across this tip on
a web site: "The problem of not having small change can be eliminated if you
pay a visit to Office Depot and buy a big box of cheap ballpoint pens to
take with you. Everyone wants them and they get better and faster results
than cash. Cleaner to handle, too."

Would this work or would most folks want cash?

It is a good idea, but don't give red ink, use only black and blue. As
always, don't throw them, but give them individually.
Don't give right away, just as if you were going to bargain.
