That has happened in other places, and then the business comes back.
People are just scared of change.

The economic downturn had nothing to do with it?

When casinos give up their love affair with tobacco, they will have a
chance at my money.

That certainly wasn't our experience with Carnival last summer.

If they want people to stop smoking, the government should stop
subsidizing the tobacco industry

Hopefully that would take effect asap but I guess there will be a lot of
not-so approving reactions.

I agree with you're thinking Charles. Sure I can choose a line like Oceania
or Azamara but there cruises are not offered at the same prices as Princess,
NCL or RCI. In time the mass market cruise lines will conform to the
continued requests of us non smokers although they'll never ban smoking
altogether for fear of losing the business.

100% Agreed. It's time to voice your complaints with the cruise lines.

Can you recall the smoke clouds rising through the spotlight in the show

I really don't think the cruise lines care one way or the other if a
passenger smokes or not. I do however think they are interested in
making money. This is a simple lesson in supply and demand. The cruise
lines have ships booked up and this means revenue. If no one booked
the cabins because of the smoking policy then they would gladly
change. How else would they stay in business? I'm not saying we all
should give up cruising however we should voice our opinion every
chance we get about the smoking policy. After I book a cruise, I call
the cruise line to voice my opinion about their smoking policy (I'm a
non smoker). If the company representative is a non smoker they simply
agree with me if they are a smoker they quote the policy and say thank
you for your booking. it's hard to belive there are more smokers these
days than non smokers. if this is true than it is indeed tempory.

I can remember smoking being allowed in college classrooms.

There was an article on msnbc.com, I think, not long ago about how
limo drivers, caterers, etc. are suffering because of economic
conditions and perceived conditions. If people are concerned, even if
they shouldn't be, they will cut back and it causes a ripple effect.

I've also read that Chicago is having a bad winter which could also be
a consideration.

According to the NY Times, Sunday edition, 24% of US males over 15 smoke, so
a fairly sizable contingent.

Oct. 26, 2006 -- Nearly 21% of U.S. adults -- 45 million men and women
-- smoked cigarettes last year, the same percentage as in 2004.

http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20061026/cdc-us-smoking-de...ne-has-

The percentage of those smoking varies widely depending on state.

So the ratio of non-smokers to smokers is almost 4:1.

Also in today's Times. 44% of cigarettes are smoked by the mentally ill.

There was actually a letter published in Cigar Afficianado a few years
back (when smoking $100 cigars had just become "cool") where someone
basically said "it's my right to smoke wherever and whenever I want
and forget the rest of the world". And people applauded. It's all an
attitude.

I'm glad good wine has fallen "out of favor", as has good single
malts. The price of my beloved Oban has dropped, and I can get a good
cab for somewhere in the 90s.
