Going to Riviera May in July.... with 18 yr old nephew

Would it be to my advantage to buy snorkel equip and take with us?
Two sets of equip for BOTH of us to use at same time?

If yes.... can I just buy the cheap stuff at Walmart

And..... then could I resale it before leaving to go back home so as
to recoup some of my money?

Advice!

Assuming no reason (I for instance need lens ground to my prescription) I
don't think so. If you are bug phobic you might want to take your own snorkel
tube and mask for that piece of mind, but I don't think it is needed in real
life.

Doubt it. Why would anyone want to buy it used. Maybe at a garage sale
after you get back.

Yes, you both want snorkel equipment, so you can snorkel together, which
is more fun and safer too.

Buy it ahead, since the rentals don't fit well and are often expensive.

Actually, when I went to Belize, I traded all of our snorkel gear (which
we bought cheap and didn't like so much) for a free night where we were
staying. They were delighted to "buy" it used, since they were just
using it for renting out anyway.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Are you only going to snorkle once in your life? Then just use rental junk.
If you're going to do this over and over again, it's worth it to go get good
stuff at a scuba shop. Who knows? You might even end up being certified and
going diving! Snorkeling is fun, but such a tease when you could be down
there.

Unfortunately I am extremely myopic. Having said that.... where does
one get a snorkel mask that has correction built in it?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

At a dive shop. At least that is where I got my husband's. With his
prescription, of course.

Don't!

Do you wear contact lenses? If so, I would highly recommend getting
1-day disposables for snorkeling. Even if you don't normally wear
contacts, give them a try. They are soft and very comfortable.

I am extremely nearsighted and this has been a wonderful solution. The
lenses are so cheap that you wouldn't care if you lost one. You would
just pop in another. But I have never lost one snorkeling or even just
swimming.

The reason I prefer them is that I cannot stand to be blind once I take
the mask off. When snorkeling there are numerous times that you take
the mask off, to clear it, or just because you get back to the beach or
want to sit on a rock. It is just horrible to not be able to see
anything, including your companions and the nice scenery, when the mask
is off.

You could probably get a year's worth of these lenses for the cost of
one prescription mask.

By the way, I wear hard lenses normally, but use the soft disposables
for beach, snorkeling and swimming, and as for backups when traveling in
case I lost a hard one.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Great idea Amy!!

I, too, am BLIND without my glasses. <sigh>

However I don't wear contacts on a daily basis. Can I just get some
disposables just for the above purpose? If yes...can I just get them
with an eye doctor intervening and by showing them my prescription?

I did wear contacts at one time... many years ago. But Im a man and
find messing with them not worth it. So quit buying and wearing them.
What Im saying is I am used to putting them in and taking them out
tho.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I wnet to dive store, bought a mask, gave them a copy of my RX and about 2
weeks later, there it was. I think you could go to Galyans, Dick's Sporting
Goods, Gander Mountain, etc. and they probably can hook you up,too.
VERY rarely the people will have masks to rent with various dyopters, but
I would hate to have to depend on them. If you know who you will be snorkeling
with and you can easily get in touch with them (say e-mail, etc) you might
want to try that. It won't be your exact RX, but maybe you can come close
enough so you don't have to grab the fish and put them 2 inches in front of
your face to see them (g).

Well I hate to get anything custom made

I was hoping there was a line of "corrected" mask out ther one can buy
"off the shelf" that has enough correction in them as to be close and
"good enough"

I know that swimming goggles can be bought this way. The are correct
but not corrected in a custom way. They just come in ranges of
correction and you buy the model that comes close. This way you can
buy them off the shelf with no doctor intervention or custom making
process.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
