Hi folks --
Just found out I get to go to my cousin's wedding in St. Thomas in February.
We'll be staying at the Emerald Beach Resort, and it is a short trip --
Friday to Monday. Friday night and most of Saturday will all be wedding
stuff, I'm sure. But in case I can squeeze in any free time, is it possible
to rent and ride a bicycle around that area? I'm not much of a resort
person, so is there anything nearby (shops, restaurants, etc.) that I can
walk to?
Anything on the island that we must see? I'm at the mercy of my family --
but if there is anything good, maybe I can get them interested. What about
good restaurants off the property?
Thanks for any help. I'm off to research on my own, but I'd prefer to hear
people's personal experiences
Happy New Year! >> Stay informed about: St. Thomas |

Last time we were in St. Thomas, about six years ago, it was extremely
dangerous to go anywhere outside some very limited areas (waterfront,
certain beaches, resorts) for fear of violent crimes. Even the
restuarant we ate at advised us to arrange for a taxi to pick us up
rather than walk a few blocks back down to the harbor. >> Stay informed about: St. Thomas |

I've been going to STT for nearly 20 years, and I pretty much go where
I want to. I just don't want to go to some parts of the island after
dark, just as in most mainland cities. Now, I'm not sure that
bicycling is a good idea since they drive on the left, the roads are
narrow and hilly with a lot of curves, and it can be a little scary
until you get used to it Shop in downtown or get a taxi to Red Hook
and get a ferry to St. John. You can get a taxi tour of the island or
shop at Cruz Bay. Enjoy your trip.

Another veteran chips in....been going to STT off and on for 25 years.
Have stayed at Sapphire Beach (the old days), Watergate Villas,
Fairway VIllas, Secret Harbor, And recently have rented private villas
the past six years. In fact we are leaving 1/21 for a two week rental
at one of the finest villas on the island. STT is safe, but it is just
like any other major city...be careful. I also don't recommend bike
riding. We car it and that is tricky enough. Cruise ship PX rent
scooters and they are a nuisance on the road. Just make sure you get to
Magen's Beach - a must see. If you are there late Jan, I'll see you
there. I;ll be the one with the pina colada!

I completely disagree with this. We spent about 10 days in the
Virgins in Jan-Feb. 1997 and then another week in Nov 1997, and have
recently been back in 2005 and 2006. I would NOT agree that you
couldn't walk around there for fear of violent crimes. I wouldn't
walk in some areas at night, just as I wouldn't walk alone in my home
city at night. You just need to use some common sense.
I would agree that I would NOT ride a bicycle, and I wouldn't walk in
some areas because the roads are narrow with no shoulders. You might
want to rent a car because the taxi rides are per person and they
aren't metered - they are from point to point.
We got a taxi to drive us around the island and stop for pictures at
various places. We went to Coki Beach and Coral World, and we took
the Sky Ride although that's a kind of tourist thing to do. We also
took the ferry to St. John where you can do the National Park thing
(hike, beach, snorkel, etc). You can rent a boat for the day, or take
a sailboat ride, or take a ferry to the BVI. I've never run out of
things to do in the Virgin Islands. >> Stay informed about: St. Thomas |

I was just in St. Thomas last week , and this time we did Coki Beach and
Coral World and it was a real nice day. Coral World , while small , has many
interesting activities for the price of admission , and others at an extra
charge. My son especially enjoyed helmet diving . I probably liked the sea
lion exibition , or the semi submersible sub , but I think there is
something for everyone . I would recommend you to visit their web page and
see if you think your family might enjoy going . It's fairly inexpensive ,
and you can also use the beach which is very close , about a 2-3 minute
walk. The beach was very crowded when I was there , but there was an
incredible amont of fish in the water so it was worth it just for the
snorkeling .
