We will be travelling (camping by tent) in Rockies (Denver -
Yellowstone - Bryce - Grand Canyon - Arizona - New Mexico - Denver)
this summer. I want to use my laptop to access the internet
(campground reservation, browse for information, update blog etc)
throught wifi.
McDonalds and Starbucks are both providing wifi access in quite a
number of locations. Costs are considered appr. similar.
As a foreigner, I do not know if both McDonalds and Starbucks can be
found in the smaller towns and non-big-city areas, which will be where
we are travelling. So can anyone provide me arguments to choose (or
choose not) either McDonalds or Starbucks.
Also (any pointers to) any comparison on availability, quality of
service, etc is appreciated.

There are many more McDonalds in the U.S. than Starbucks. When you're
traveling you'll pass them frequently. I'm sure their websites list
their locations, so you can look up the specific spots you'll be
visiting.
However, if you're camping you might be some distance from the nearest
place that has WiFi. You might want to check the official sites for
Yellowstone, Bryce, etc to see if they discuss WiFi availability in
the parks. Also, I'm not sure if you can plug in your laptop to
recharge the battery at McDonalds or Starbucks, so you if you're
camping you'll need to consider how you'll keep the battery charged.

You will more McDonalds dotting major highways and in smaller towns
than Starbucks, which tend to congregate on street corners in urban
areas and suburban strip-malls. IMHO, McDonalds appeals more to
blue-collar folk and those in a rush who do not mind their leat-lamp,
rubbery food and watery coffee. Starbucks, OTOH, appeals more
to snobbish types those who do not mind overpaying for ambiance,
better coffee options, and stale bakery products for eating. >> Stay informed about: Starbucks or McDonalds wifi? |

All the OP has to do is google for "wi-fi Grand Canyon" or something
like that. McDonalds and Starbucks are not the only options for free
wi-fi. >> Stay informed about: Starbucks or McDonalds wifi? |

Sounds like a great trip. You shouldn't have much trouble w/ wifi
access.
I'm really posting to caution you to make advanced reservations in many
of the locations you are planning to visit (read: NOW). In the
National Parks, many of these camp sites open up 366 days in advance
for reservations... and the coveted campgrounds are sold out months and
months in advance. They do hold back some sites for daily arrivals...
but try to avoid that chaos. Even the accommodations outside the Parks
fill up. Stay in the Parks !
Look at this site, if you haven't already.
http://www.nps.gov/
If you want help with drive times between these great distances... just
ask.

There's a very nice wifi locator on the URL below. It lists and displays
on a map both free and paid wifi access points

Hey, handy site, thanks!
I'm curious, though--do they really only list "spots" and not
citywide free WiFi projects? Or does it depend on whether the
sponsoring organization submits the data to MSN? I'm asking
because MSN's listing for downtown Mountain View is missing
the most obvious WiFi access: the free system implemented by
Google. Simple oversight, or conspiracy?

Cost should no be a factor!! We travel all over North America in an RV
and find free wifi most every place, even in some Federal campgrounds
with consession locations.

Many KOA campgrounds have wifi. Some of the National Parks may have it
in the built up areas, especially around the more expensive lodging. >> Stay informed about: Starbucks or McDonalds wifi? |

I just checked for Tucson. The first place listed is Wilde
Playhouse, which went belly up a couple of years ago.

I gave up long ago any hope of finding up to date wi-fi or
netcafe sites.
