December ocean swimming in far NQ is fine - provided you exercise common
sense. Popular beaches (near population centres) have stinger proof
enclosures - large ones. These are based on research and design work done by
marine scientists at James Cook U in Townsville. Lifeguard patrolled beaches
are common (and the lifeguards give accurate 'stinger reports').
Stingers are only a problem during certain weather cycles. The daily
newspapers in the area give 'stinger reports'. Generally Northerly or NE
winds are the culprits.
The Sunshine Coast is fine. The stingers which very occasionally appear
there are not the dangerous ones found in FNQ. The only problem on the
Sunshine Coast in December is likely to be people. It's loooong summer
school vacation time - prices will be high, and crowds large.
