After concluding that December ocean swimming in N Queensland may be
impossible given the stinger situation, we are revising our plans and would
appreciate input as to where we might go after Port Douglas that we could
indeed swim and play in the ocean for a few days.

We assume we'll be flying.

On an earlier trip we travelled to the coast south of Brisbane and would
like to see a different area---I'm starting to explore the Sunshine Coast.
We are not surfers and will have already done our snorkeling at the GBR. We
would welcome any suggestions for places with good ocean swimming.
Thanks,
Diane

I believe there are fenced off areas on the beaches in northern queensland
that are stinger free. If swimming in one of these "pools" doesn't appeal
to you, you will have to head south, (although I'm not sure exactly how far
south you actually have to go).

If you are going to swim at a beach that isn't patrolled by life-guards
(where you have to swim between the flags), be careful where you choose to
swim due to hidden under-tows. A lot of the beaches on the east coast have
strong currents and aren't good swimming beaches (especially if you're not a
strong swimmer). Some of the beaches can be very dangerous. Also, just
because the water looks "calm" doesn't always mean it is safe. If you're
unsure, ask the locals. And if a sign says "don't swim" don't.

All of the "safe" swimming beaches in Australia are good (I assume you're
not from Australia!!).

The Queensland Tourism Office may be able to help you with safe
swimming/stinger free beaches.

December ocean swimming in far NQ is fine - provided you exercise common
sense. Popular beaches (near population centres) have stinger proof
enclosures - large ones. These are based on research and design work done by
marine scientists at James Cook U in Townsville. Lifeguard patrolled beaches
are common (and the lifeguards give accurate 'stinger reports').

Stingers are only a problem during certain weather cycles. The daily
newspapers in the area give 'stinger reports'. Generally Northerly or NE
winds are the culprits.

The Sunshine Coast is fine. The stingers which very occasionally appear
there are not the dangerous ones found in FNQ. The only problem on the
Sunshine Coast in December is likely to be people. It's loooong summer
school vacation time - prices will be high, and crowds large.

Noosa, Caloundra, Rainbow Beach ... there are great beaches right the way up
the Sunshine Coast.

I would personally head for the Northern Rivers Beaches in NSW. Beautiful
clean water, great surf, long stretches of lovely white sand.

It will be very hot anywhere in Queensland in December and the further south
you come the better the weather will be.

Queensland beaches are nowhere near as good as Northern NSW.

What a load of Hog Wash, obviously written by some one who has very little
life experience.

There is nowhere in Australia that is "better" than somewhere else in
Australia. It is just different.

The observation that some place is hotter than somewhere else is purely
subjective as is "the surf is better and the sand is whiter the scenery is
more beautiful."

Oh really?

So the data on the Bureau of Meteorology's website showing the
December mean maximum temperatures for Cairns and Byron Bay - 31.4 and
26.4 degrees respectively - is purely subjective?

Must tell them that it's all hogwash and they're wasting our taxes.
