I know there's the standard $10 per day, per person gratuity added to
your bill, but I have a couple of questions about cruise tipping:
1. If using a special service like the spa, do the prices include a
tip, do they automatically add one, or do you have to tip them yourself?
If the latter, do you have to have cash, or can you have the tip billed
to your stateroom account along with the service?
2. Excursions that include normally tippable services, like the tea at
the Empress Hotel in BC - does the excursion price include the tip?
PS: Another question about the Empress tea - looking at their website,
they show their first tea service, IIRC, at 12:30 p.m.,but the Princess
time for the city tour and tea lists the trip as running from 9
a.m.-noon. Do they have a special early service just for cruise tours?
Thanks!

My experience as well, Rosalie. I always expect to tip the independent
operators that run the tours, whether I book through the cruise line
or independently.

Because I'm tipping the folks that work for the operator...not the
operator themselves. Rarely is it the owner of the tour company that
is actually running the tour - and if it was the owner then no, I
wouldn't tip him/her. But, for the folks that work for the owner?
Absolutely. Same as tipping a stylist at a salon that he/she doesn't
own.

I think you're just trying to be argumentative, but I'll answer you
anyway.
I don't know how negotiations go between tour company owners and their
employees, but I'm guessing it's similar to all of the service
industry...minimal hourly (or daily) salary with the promise (or
expectation) of gratuities to round out the take-home pay - like
waitstaff, salon employees, valet car parkers, cab drivers, etc. So,
that's what the employees have agreed upon with their employers. And,
I have no problem with this set-up. Tipping is my pleasure with
satisfactory or above services rendered.

I've "out-of the-loop" on this tipping fiasco. I think Holland America
started it! I am a senior, can anyone exolain it to me?

I've never seen any mention of tips in any tour descriptions - at
least not for the tour guides. My experience has been that the tour
guides expect tips. Of course I haven't had many tours where meals or
food were included, or at least none that I knew about from the tour
description so maybe Princess would say whether the service charge for
the tea was included. >> Stay informed about: Tipping questions |

Why do you believe it necessary to 'tip' an independent operator for
providing a service at a price they set? Do you believe they set the price
too low? >> Stay informed about: Tipping questions |

I expect satisfactory service when I pay the 'contracted' price and am
willing to 'give a little extra' if the service provided exceeds my
expectations. >> Stay informed about: Tipping questions |

What you describe may well be the norm in the USA, but surely most cruise
excursions are taken elsewhere and in many places (the EU, Australia, New
Zealand for example) wage rates are adequate for service personnel. And, of
course, many people who go on cruises are not USAians.

It is customary to tip them and the wages of those employees are
usually based on the wage income being supplemented with tips.

So, they'd better work their rumps off to have happy campers, right?

If your wage rates are adequate as you state, then why is it that when we
have traveled in Europe, it was suggested that we leave a small tip to round
off the amount if the service charge was not already included in the bill?
How about the attendants that are in the ladies' rooms..they expected to be
tipped.
When we have taken land excursions in Europe, we were always told that the
guide expected to be tipped, as well as the bus driver...what is your
explanation for that? And yes, we are US citizens.

I don't think they have to work their rumps off to have happy campers.

The first is a tradition of common courtesy of simply rounding off the
bill.
The second is a human collecting the toll instead of a machine
collecting the toll.
The third is because said tours are invariably targeted at American
tourists, so it is set up with the low come-on price with the
expectation that the American customers will then tip.
