Hi All
We wish to travel from Perth in late March 2006 after visiting with friends
to Sydney. Instead of flying we are considering going by train. Has anyone
done this recently and any advice. Looking at web sites but cannot decide
whither to buy the ticket in Australia or alternately but here in the UK.
All advice gratefully received.

Pat

How many are in your group? If more than 2, it is cheaper and a greater
experience (if you have the stamina) to hire a car and drive across. BTW,
you do know that the train costs lots more than flying?

Hi,
I am planning to do this next year also but the other way around. If
you are member of the YHA OR HI (Hostling International), providing you
book through a YHA travel centre, you can get a discount on the Ghan,
Indian Pacific & Overland for a Red Kanga Daynighter Seat, I am told
the Red Kanga Day/Nighter seats on the Ghan, IP & Overland aren't too
bad for comfort wise! The cost of joining the YHA is about 16 GBP.
Good Luck!

I endorse that view. Worth doing the off-train trips (extra cost) as
well. Make sure you book Gold Kangaroo class. This has sleeper cabins
and includes all meals. It is a big step up from Red Kangaroo, which
basically has a hamburger bar, and you sit in airline seats unless you
pay extra.

I did the trip 2 years ago in Gold Kangaroo. The first night (heading
out from Sydney) was a bit rough, but the railway is much smoother
after that. They have improved the line since then.
