I was at LAX on Friday. DFW, maybe ten years ago, AMS a week ago.

You can I think I get lost whenever I transit there but I'm never sure if I'm
going the right way or not. I always seem to end up outside the building, walk
down the road and go back in the terminal I want.

As you need to "go domestic" on a transfer, and the airport seems to
have a collection of disjoint terminals (albeit arranged in a pretty
horseshoe, landside) then I'm not at all surprised by that.
