Hello all!
I am hoping to find some advice on travelling to the Caribbean. I am
planning a trip in November and I am looking for a new place to visit!
I have been to Varadero Cuba & Punta Cana Dominican last year....any
thoughts on a new tropical destination??? Any feedback would be much
appreciated!
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: Travel Advice.... |

You need to be more specific. Other than your request for a "tropical
destination," which applies to every island in the Caribbean, you haven't
mentioned anything to give us guidance. Give us some idea of what you would
like to do. Do you want to sail? wind surf? snorkel? swim? SCUBA dive?
sunbathe? play golf? play tennis? horseback ride? hike? visit rain forests?
shop? gourmet dining? night life? casinos? visit historical sites and
forts? bicycle? whale watch?
Do you want an all-inclusive or not? What price range? Do you want a lot of
other people around or not?

I am looking for a vacation mainly for relaxing & sunbathing. I would
like to go all-inclusive, with some beach activities available during
the day (banana boat, catamaran, aerobics, volleyball etc.), a place
that has night entertainment or clubs nearby...preferably with a
younger crowd/singles. My price range is $1000-1200cnd. I don't have
a particular island in mind, just looking for some
recommendations.....thanks

Negril, Jamaica? Possibly one of the Sandals resorts (I've never staid
at any of them). I would recommend the Firefly but it is not AI.

I sometimes hestitate to suggest Key West because it is the only place
I've been recently, but if you stay at the Pier House at the very
northern end of Duval Street, the main street of the island, you have
a small beach and a pool for sunbathing, and you are within walking
distance of all of the snorkling or sailing trips and as much
night-life as you want. There are plenty of good bars and resteraunts
and lots of new food to try.
Poke around starting here...http://keywest.com/

You might also consider destinations like Playa del Carmen, Playacar, Akumal, and Tulum in Mexico's Yucatan. The area including Cancun is known as the Mayan Riviera. I don't like Cancun; it's too artificial. But I've been to Playa del Carmen, Playacar and Akumal. Even though the whole Mayan Riviera is growing by leaps and bounds...these towns still have some charm to them.
I don't know how Canadian dollars convert to Mexico's New Pesos, but US Dollars buy lots of Pesos. These locations are right on the Caribbean so you're getting the same clear blue waters for less cost. All hotel staff and many shop keepers are multi-lingual so, you don't have to learn Spanish unless you want.

Key West is like my second home. Pier House is nice but during High
Season can be very, very costly. Besides there are plenty of Beds &
Breakfast that can give most of the hotels a run for their money when
it comes to amenities. Even though it isn't strictly Caribbean, Key
West has that "island" feel. Everything is within walking or bicycling
distance.
There are many web pages for the Fla Keys but I find this one to have
the most useful info:

I think that Negril Jamaica may have what you're looking for. There is
Sandals, Hedonism, Couples, Grand Lido, etc. which are all inclusive.
The beach is 7 miles long with lots of watersports and the night life is
abundant. It is a safe place as long as you don't leave your common
sense at home. If you do go, take an excursion to the YS falls, the
ride there is nice up into the "hills" and the falls themselves are
quite isolated so you may only see a few people there. Try lunch at
Cosmo's on the beach...very good food. I stayed in a beachside condo
when I went back in 1995 so I cannot recommend one resort over another.
I do know, since I stayed right next door to Hedonism, that they party
well into the early morning. I know of people that stayed at Sandals
and raved about it. Enjoy...wherever you go.
