Archived from groups: alt>travel>greece (more info?)

I don't know if there's anyone looking at this newsgroup these days but
if so, hello, and happy New Year to come!

I'm thinking about my next trip to Greece in May, and this time would
like to spend a few days (maybe a week if things go well) exploring the
island Evvia. I know it's quite a large island - probably too big to
explore comfortably from just one base, so I was thinking of staying
for a few days in the north of the island (perhaps at the village of
Limni on the western coast) before moving down to the south-east end
(maybe Karistos?).

The guide books I've looked at don't go into much detail, apart from a
general description of the island and the capital, Halkida/Chalkis, and
my web searches resulted in not much more than the usual crop of villas
and apartments for rent. If anyone reading this has been to Evvia and
can suggest any nice places to stay (a bit vague but you know what I
mean) or anything at all about the island I'd be very pleased to hear
from you.

Thanks

Hi Mike

Sorry I can't help with your enquiry, but I'm relieved to get your message.
I was beginning to wonder if the group was no longer operating.

Good to hear from you.

Happy new year

Hello all,

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you. The group is NOT dead and people are
checking it out during this time of the year.

But now to business.

We've been to Karistos. That is a lovely place, if you like the
quietness of the real Greek part of the island; During Greek holiday
season this can be a bit hectic because there are a lot of Greeks from
Athens coming over there for the weekends and for their holidays. I
know from my parents that the north is very beaytiful and very quiet
with a lot of nature (springs, forests, ...).

Our place to stay in Karistos: Rooms To Let Bill Kolobaris. 42 Sahtouri
street, 34001 Karystos. Tel: 0030/2224022071. You'll have Vassilis on
the phone probably.
The hotel where there is a good stay is Hotel Fani - the northern part
of Evia. Info about this hotel is at: http://www.hotelfani.gr/

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year, too. We are just back on line, group
wise, after a dreadful time with a sick laptop.

Sorry I cant help you with Evvia either, Mike. The closest we have been to
it was when we looked over to it when we were at Nea Makri this past May. It
looks like it would be a fun island to take a look around though. Smile

In June we are going back to Santorini for five days then heading back to
Naxos for a relaxing time. Hope to take the Little Cyclades trip this time,
we were too early in the season for it this May/June.

Yes, I think most tourists pass it by. I certainly have for the past
ten years, but I understand Greeks go there a lot. That's one of the
things that attracts me. Last May I went to Kithera, another forgotten
island - it's a gem.
