Personally, I far prefer the Zambian side of the Falls. My
recomendation is to stay in Livingstone on the Zambian side, and take
a day trip over to the Zim side. At the moment, the Zim side is
depressing and the traders are just too pushy and desperate for
tourist dollars.
The situation in Zimbabwe is impossible to predict. There hasn't been
much unrest in the country up till now, but things could change. But
you shouldn't worry about any unrest in Zimbabwe affecting tourists at
Vic Falls. If any unrest breaks out at Vic Falls, Mugabe's security
forces will clamp down with a ferocity and ruthlessness that defies
description. The chances are that tourists won't even know that it
happened. Besides, if unrest does break out, it'll most likely be in
Harare or Bulawayo, or in the smaller towns such as Chinoyi, or Karoi.
