We will be going to South Africa next July and wish to visit Victoria Falls.
We have heard that there is much unrest in Zimbabwe and are trying to decide
whether to stay in Zimbabwe or Zambia because of the unrest. Any
suggestions. Thanks. Mel.

Next july is still a long way from now and anything could happen. From a
normalized situation to real escalation. Impossible to predict.

Although the Zimbabwean people and business do need tourists and income,
I would suggest to stay at the Zambian side. Or at least wait with
making bookings till you know how the situation develops. At the moment
I would not advise to visit Zimbabwe.

Regards,
Hans

Vic. Falls is still busy (not so busy as it used to be) with tourism, mainly
overlanders and tourists who fly directly into Zimbabwe.

I would prefer Zambia, and you can always ask there if it is easy to make a
day visit to Vic. Falls.

Corné.

Personally, I far prefer the Zambian side of the Falls. My
recomendation is to stay in Livingstone on the Zambian side, and take
a day trip over to the Zim side. At the moment, the Zim side is
depressing and the traders are just too pushy and desperate for
tourist dollars.

The situation in Zimbabwe is impossible to predict. There hasn't been
much unrest in the country up till now, but things could change. But
you shouldn't worry about any unrest in Zimbabwe affecting tourists at
Vic Falls. If any unrest breaks out at Vic Falls, Mugabe's security
forces will clamp down with a ferocity and ruthlessness that defies
description. The chances are that tourists won't even know that it
happened. Besides, if unrest does break out, it'll most likely be in
Harare or Bulawayo, or in the smaller towns such as Chinoyi, or Karoi.
