Low-cost airline Ryanair will shut down its website for three days to upgrade
its reservations system.

Customers will not be able to book flights from 2200 GMT on 22 February until
2300 GMT on 25 February.

Ryanair says its current system is close to "breaking point" and the new
software is needed to handle bookings.

"Last week, Ryanair warned that profits could be halved this year as
fuel costs rise and the UK pound weakens.

"The warning came as the budget airline reported that net profit dropped
27% to 35m euros ($52m; £26m) during the three months to the end of
December.

Not Ryanair especially, but I've noticed airports being much emptier
recently, and many fares being cheap much closer to departure. Perhaps a
combination of "time of the year", "entering recession" and "fed up with
security"?

The latter can definitely influence decisions. I'm off to BRU in a month or
two, and decided early on I wasn't going to fly, even though it arguably
would have been more convenient (drive to LHR, park, fly) than E* (which is
drive to station, park, train, tube, train...), simply because of the utter
horribleness of my last experiences originating/terminating LHR.

"The shutdown will also allow it to comply with an order by UK market
regulators to make prices on its website clearer to consumers."

About bloody time.

Funny, though, how easyJet didn't require a 3-day shutdown to do the
same thing.

As I understand it, they're going to take the opportunity to upgrade the
whole booking system, not just the prices...

I've always loved travelling by air but the security hassles now make it an
ordeal at most British airports. I am fed up of surly staff and pathetic
rules seemingly designed to make the whole business as unpleasant as
possible. That and the worsening attitude of some flight attendants has
meant that my last 2 trips to Denmark have been by overnight ferry from
Harwich to Esbjerg. 18 hours in first class accommodation, with private
lounge and free beer and snacks. All without all the hassles of airports...

Sea is indeed a most civilised way of travelling, but sadly not a
quick one. I wouldn't choose an overnight sailing because I can't
really sleep well on them.

Heh. As someone who's never enjoyed flying and is used to "British" service,
I haven't noticed a difference.

Civilised, sure, but if you consider sea a comfortable and pleasant means of
transport, I'm guessing you've never been to Scandinavia in bad weather.

Flying is unpleasant when there's a lot of turbulence, sea is
unpleasant in a gale. In good weather, sea is more civilised than
flying.

Good enough? Wink

I certainly have.... I've been in Force 9 storms on some crossings and been
sick as a dog. And still went back for more....

There's definately a difference if you're used to flying everywhere with
just hand luggage. The difference not being one of staff "attitude".

That's slightly alarming. I'm planning to make my next trip to Vegas with
just hand luggage - electively, but since they cut my connection time in
Atlanta down to 95 minutes I don't see I have much alternative. What
problems should I look forward to?

Problems include:

restrictions on number of items (could be just one allowed)
restrictions on size of items (smallish rollerbag)
restrictions on weight (more an airline thing than airport)
Ban on liquids and gels (some exceptions) and sharp objects.
