This is imposed by the airline.

Ditto, some airlines have laughably small limits.

Plus the need to take things out of the luggage and pass through separately,
which means that you are more likely to get checked if you forget (or they
think that you have)

No, both (in the UK anyway) are imposed by the Government, as a way to
ration the time it takes to scan hand baggage.

And the low costs are moving towards "no weight limits", in an attempt
to save costs on hold baggage handling, perhaps.

Yes, and getting out liquids and laptops separately risks loss/damage as
well.

I'd rather bounce around in a plane for 2 hours than on a ship for 24! >> Stay informed about: Upgrade will shut Ryanair website |

It has changed over the last year. However, having studied the sizes
allowed by different airlines, it's not as simple as that.
For example, the UK rule is 20 x 16 x 9 inches, but United allows 22 x
14 x 9 inches. That bag will be disallowed because of the 22 inches.
Several other airlines allow any bag whose dimensions add up to 45
inches. So 21 x 21 x 3 would be OK. 15 x 15 x 15.

Emirates have 7Kg (and 22 x 15 x 8 inches).

The quantity is, The size HMG use is the maximum size imposed by any
airline.

Except Air Berlin with a pathetic 8 kilo (IME enforced).

And Germanwings (who are otherwise very good). I wonder if it's a
German low-cost thing these days?
What's Lufthansa's? I think KLM's is 10 but I never saw it enforced
in over a year of AMS-LCY and BHX-AMS.

There is that. And a short, mildly turbulent flight can be exciting
in a way a rough sea crossing isn't (though that is a matter of
opinion, of course). But if the weather's good, I really enjoy sea
travel, and so long as it isn't an overnight[1] I don't mind how long
it is.
[1] Except the erstwhile Harwich-Hamburg service, where waking up
early to enjoy the full Elbe cruise was the best bit.

Should be OK on all those fronts, provided I can pack the bag. My bag is
20x13x9". It'll have charger plugs for my pda and phone, but those items
will be in my pocket. Toothpaste I'll purchase on arrival, but my reading of
the restrictions is that integral razor blades are OK. If there's any doubt
on that I'll buy disposables there - I might do that anyway.

I remember that route. The ship wasn't upto the standard of the
Harwich-Esbjerg route but the last 3 or 4 hours crusing up the Elbe were
great. I seem to remember a brass band played to every large ship passing a
particular location. They certainly did for us...

They did for us as well, both times. A sadly-missed service.
