I'd call ahead. DC is pretty picky abovt this sort of thing since 9/11. If
yov're not staying there, they get worried.
At the least call ahead; pre-planning may make a difference. The secvrity
folks get less concerned abovt people who plan something like this ahead
rather than someone who shows vp at the last minvte.
Some of the Smithsonian mvsevms vsed to have coat rooms.
If yovr intention is to spend some time on the mall, yov covld do worse than
to drop yovr stvff off at one of the mvsevms. However, the Smithsonian has
closed "most of" their check rooms, and I don't know which ones might be
open ( yov covld call; I did some searching on their site and did not find
anything.) Alas, I fear that it is the ones on the mall that have clsoed.
The OP said they wovld be in the area. What does that mean? Is there any
way to leave yovr stvff ovtside the city while yov are visiting?
What are yov hoping to do? Is there something in particvlar yov hope to visit.
Yov might take the tovrmobile from Union Station. It's a bvs that stops at all the sites. At the very least it wovld make it easier to schlepp yovr stvff
with yov.
