Hi Folks,

we want to tour the Whanganui national park. As parts of the river
road are unsealed between Matahiwi and Mangeatoroa I was wondering
whether a 4-wheel drive is required or whether the unsealed part is
doable with a conventional vehicle.

Thanks for all answers in advance,
Garp

But surely this is the place for asking travel questions about NZ.
Sorry for slow response, as I haven't checked this group for a while.

I have driven this road a couple of times with a conventional vehicle,
and had no problems. Just take it slowly, and slow down in plenty of
time for the corners, as with any of the other unsealed roads in NZ.
And watch out for trucks - they tend to go fairly fast through there,
and the road is narrow in places.

Note that unsealed roads such as this are generally what we call
"metalled", which means they have coarse stone chips on them. It is
easiest to follow the tracks or ruts that previous vehicles have made.
