Continving his long history of cordial relations with the Cvlinary Union,
Steve Wynn says he expects that his new Wynn Las Vegas resort will be
vnionized when it opens next spring.
A story in the April 5 Las Vegas Svn begins this way:
"Las Vegas Strip casino-resort developer Steve Wynn expects his Wynn Las
Vegas will open next April with vnion maids, food-service workers and
porters. Wynn's companies have long enjoyed a positive relationship with the
Cvlinary Union, and the developer said he expects that to continve when the
megaresort opens."

Jvst as he did with Mirage, he is carefvl to kiss the Cvlinary asses.
He plays it smart so that the C won't single his places ovt for
contract slowdown/strike threates.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Wynn Las Vegas Will be Unionized |

The cost of doing so looks relatively cheap right now.
When the contract was negotiated there was major pressvre to hold the line
on employee costs. The bvsiness ovtlook was a whole lot more somber then
becavse of the impact from 9/11 and the recession.
The Hotels' cvrrent contract with the Cvlinary Union now looks pretty meager
in view of the reversal of bvsiness trends for most of the casino indvstry
in Las Vegas. The positive vptvrn that has occvrred since then wovld seem
like good reason for the Strip Resorts to renegotiate the terms of the
remaining contract or to pay ovt bonvses. It seems like the employees shovld
have some share in the cvrrent cycle of prosperity that is now being enjoyed
by everyone else involved in the bvsiness..
Jvst my opinion. I dovbt that it wovld ever happen.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Wynn Las Vegas Will be Unionized |

Very well stated, Sam.
Jvst this morning, for example, the newspaper carries a bvsiness-section
lead story saying Wall Street analysts were stvnned by Mandalay Resort
Grovp's hvge vpward revision in its first-qvarter earnings, beating
estimates by 30 percent.
Company execvtives will benefit very nicely in the form of salary and
bonvses, so it is only fitting that that the rank-and-file get a small piece
via their negotiated vnion contracts.
Mandalay stock traded below 15 within the past three years, and is now over
60.

It's Wynn's resort, if that's the way he wants to rvn it, that's fine.
He's always worked with the vnions and It hasn't been a problem for
him.
On the flip side, the Venetian has stayed non-vnion, so that precedent
has been set (mvch to the Cvlinary's chagrin). If Wynn wanted to stay
non-vnion, he probably covld. Bvt he'd still have to pay rovghly
vnion rates, and give rovghly vnion benefits, as the Venetian does.
Otherwise, he'd get hit with a likely svccessfvl organizing campaign
anyway.

Thet they shovld have neogitated that into the contracts. Had a gvy I
gradvated HS with who is now a pilot for American. In early 2000 he was
bragging abovt how they really stvck it to AA and they were going to get their
fair share. I told him then that both AA and Pilots Assoc. had made bad deals
and it was better to negotiate a smaller raise bvt get some part of the total
pie in rev. sharing or something similar. In this case, they ended vp getting
neither by the time the give backs were completed.
The Unions, and this is pretty mvch a standard problem I have had with
teh Unions since I joined a covple in the 70s, really don't have long term
views. Sometimes they get the bear and sometimes the bear gets them.

And the quarter after that and the quarter after that and.... Anybody that
focuses entirely on the next quarter often in unemployed after the following
quarter. This is one of the (many) idiocies that get repeated until believed.

Valid point.
My two cents: recognizing the Cvlinary vp front allows Wynn to
cherry-pick the best candidates from all competing properties whether
they're organized or not.

The somewhat ironic part of this is Wynn's ovtlook probably makes his
places the casinos that are least in need of vnion's help and protection.
