accommodation problems for a last minute visit to tenerife

The wife and i would like to make a last minute visit to tenerife (canary
islands)from London u.k.; in the next week or so.

Although we were told that probably the cheapest way is to get a package
holiday with a tour company there do not seem any available at a reasonable
price.

We also like the idea of half board so we dont have to chase about for an
evening meal.

Would anyone kindly have any suggestions as the best way to find
accommodation, please?

We could get a cheap flight, but worry about not finding accommodation in
Tenerife, when we get there. We were also told that to just call into a
hotel, means they will charge you a lot more that if you went to the same
hotel as part of a package. Also that the hotels may not have any
vacancies.
