| Please help I have 3-4 weeks to spend on holidays in March. If I want
beaches, sun, places to chill out, things to do and see, where should I
go in South / Central America or the Caribbean
YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED!

Graham,
There are so many possibilities.
As far as the Caribbean, two recommendations would be: the Dominican
Republic or Cuba (if you aren't American).

i am american and i travelled to cuba a few years ago. it's totally doable,
but you have to be okay with violating the trade embargo and flying
through mexico, the bahamas, or canada (for example.)
i LOVED cuba though. lots of beautiful music, scenery and people, although
food wasnt the best. >> Stay informed about: need some advice |

beautiful white sand to choose from.

I agree with the Dominican Republic for the Carribean, though I managed to
see most in 2weeks.
I would do the west side of Mexico, head down to Costa Rica and then
possibly Guatamala for Central.
If South America I would go to Uruguay, Paraguay, or Chili.(I like less
touristy countries)

South Central America or the Caribbean - that's a lot of places. I can
tell you where I would go, but it might not be where you'd like. I could
suggest Jamaica, but you might find the locals too laid back. You might
not like seeing the level of poverty some Jamaicans live in on a daily
basis. I like Cozumel, Mexico but you might not enjoy the huge volume
of cruise ship passengers that arrive on an almost daily basis.
I think it would be a good idea to get some brochures from travel
agencies or go to your local bookstore and get a travel guide book or
two. There's more to a place than just beaches. What are the people
like? What about the food? Is it very spicy or less so? Are there
waves on the beach or does a coral reef make for calmer waters? Can you
go topless, clothing optional or not? Read up on what these places get a
general idea of what they can offer.
I don't know your funds, but since you have time - maybe the thing to do
would be book a 7 day Caribbean Cruise first. That way you'll get a
sampling of islands and then can decide which one to return to for the
remainder of your vacation.

Gee, why does this sound like an FAQ to me?
Which, of course, is _always_ followed by dozens of FQA's...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: need some advice |

With that kind of time, why not look into Belize? Lots of things to do on
the mainland (caving, hiking, climbing, birding, exploring) and then out to
the Cayes for snorkelling, diving, sun and sea and chilling out.
Check out San Ignacio as a first base for inland adventures and then out to
Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker to finish up your vacation chilling.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: need some advice |

You forgot the Mayan ruins.

Or Placencia
Costa Rica is another place you might think about - volcanoes, 11
different kinds of rainforest for birding and animal sightings,
Caribbean and Pacific beaches (better than Belize IMHO), white water
rafting, wind surfing, ocean kayaking, real mountains for hiking,
several nice museums - some snorkeling and diving but not as good as
Belize.
You could also think about Barbados which has old plantation houses, 3
different beach areas (calm on the Caribbean side, surfing
possibilities on the Atlantic side, and the south has in between),
caves, museums, zoos and gardens, plus you can make side trips to
nearby islands.

Yes, I did, thanks. :^) I knew there was something I'd left off and
couldn't put my finger on it.
