Post subject: which area of Berlin to stay in?
Archived from groups: rec>travel>europe (more info?)

We're looking to book an apartment for 2 adults & 2 young children in
Berlin for a few days in April. Our ideal spot would be close to
restaurants, shops & public transport, not over-run with tourists &
not too noisy but not miles & miles from the sights. Can anyone help
with advice?

I had thought about Charlottenburg or Wilmersdorf (possibly near
Bundesplatz U-Bahn) - any comments about these areas?

Thanks

Wilmersdorf is a good idea
Don't forget, you get around very easily with the U Bahn

This agency

http://www.coming-home.org/

found me a small but excellent furnished apartment when I first moved
here in August last year.

It was in a quiet street just around the corner from Winterfeldtplatz
in Schöneberg - great outdoor market in Winterfeldtplatz on Weds and
Sats (more stalls on Sats) - German, Turkish, SE Asian, Indian, Korean
(etc) eateries around Maassenstr, U-Bahn at Nollendorfplatz.

Charlottenburg is great too - although beware of Charlottenburg Nord -
I was looking for places to buy there: waited 30 minnutes for an
estate agent to turn up and the most exciting thing I saw was a cat
chasing a wild rabbit.

Wilmersdorf is good too, although quiet.

If you contact an agency, tell them you want to live in a "Kiez" - a
district where shops and eateries are all within walking distance of
where you live. Your post above describes a "Kiez" perfectly!

Good luck!

If you have offers and you're not sure about the district, do get back
to the group and I'll do my best to help.

No, I would prefer to talk about Friedrichshain. I had walked through the
area on one visit, and thought it looked like a good place to stay, with
loads of restaurants. So, on the next visit I booked a hotel in Friedrichshain.
At dinner time we went out, expecting to have a vide selection of
restaurants to choose from. First place we came to turned out to be a bar.
Next place also a bar. Then a lounge. A club. Another bar. A cafe/lounge.
And so on...

Finding a place with a focus on eating, not drinking, took forever, and
we ended going into the first restaurant we found.

Friedrichshain is a cool area for nightlife, but is inconvenient for
seeing the sights.

Isn't a "Kiez" a red light district?

Why? We were near the Warschauer Strasse station which is on the main
S-Bahn axis.

The Reeperbahn in Hamburg is certainly referred to there as a "Kiez"
but the word is used differently in Berlin and elsewhere in northern
Germany..

Bit behind the times, aren't you?

Non-smoking law came into force on 1st January and applies to cafés,
restaurants etc. Few exeptions.

I thought the states were implementing this differently? I'd love to be
wrong- I'll be Cologne in a few weeks!

They are. Apparently in Berlin you can have an indoor smoking
area......but it has to be totally hermetically sealed from everywhere
else, and there is to be no service there. I haven't seen such a place
yet.

In Saarland, small, one-person owned and operated bars can decide
their own policy.

Hmmm - ban is (apparently) being phased in between January and July,
but you shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere smoke-free.
