cell phone advice needed

traveling to aus in 2 weeks time ,i only have a telecom cell phone and i
have been told that i will loose the software in my cellphone if i put a sim
card from aus into my telecom phone.i have been told that i need to hook up
to globel roaming,but with globel roaming any call in aus to aus are run
though nz ,I have been offered a vodaphone to use and have been told that
the sim card can be used both in aus and nz.
which is the best way to go ? .

Where is your phone network NZ?
How long are you staying in Au?
How many calls are you going to make?
How many calls do you expect to receive? (as you pay to receive the call
from NZ even if you are being called from Au)
