Archived from groups: rec>travel>africa (more info?)

My partner and I are moving to South Africa (hopefully in September
2007). I am a South African immigrant and my partner is French.

What is the correct permit to apply for my partner to apply for ?

I believe that people who are not married (we not married but in a
'Life Partnership') can apply for a life partner permit ?

Can we also apply for temporary residency permit ?

Can my partner work whilst holding a life partner permit?

What document(s) should we fill out ?

Can we start the process in South Africa ?

Look forward to your response.

Thanks in advance
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I'm afraid I can't help at all except to point you towards the
Department of Home Affairs who would be dealing with this matter.

I've never heard of a Life Partner permit, and AFAIK, there is no
dispensation in South African law for non-married couples. I'm in a
"life partnership" and we have no legal status other than as two
single people. There is no legal concept of "common law marriage" in
South Africa in spite of this being commonly believed.

I know this sounds mercenary, but why not just get get married for the
sake of convenience?

Regards,
Marc
