Hi guys

I am going to visit .nz net year (planning for 8 weeks) and I am curious
to know whether it's worth including the Chatham islands. I am thinking
of going Wellington-Chatham and returning from Chatham to Christchurch.
(I will start my tour of the South Island from there).

Two more questions:

One: I want to go to White Island, NZ only active marine volcano off
Whakatane. Anyone been there? Is it worth it?

The other question I have is regarding RTW (from London, UK). I want to
visit friends in Sydney en route and return via South America,
preferably Buenos Aires. Does anyone know if there is an RTW that covers
those cities? Is it worth considering a RTW at all, do you think?

Thanks in advance. I will be posting more questions as I figure the
itinerary.

Unless you can find some info that would draw you to the Chathams,
give it a miss.

Whakaari [White Island].
There are both helo and fixed wing flights available.
Volcanicair has one flight that includes an approx one hour guided
tour.

Have you talked to a qualified travel agent?
He/she should be able to pull up the necessary details for you.

I went in January with my wife and 2 sons. We all enjoyed it. We went by
boat from Whakatane (sp) I can't recall the name of the operator. The guide
asked us to taste the sulphur and the water bubbling up from fissures.
Weird. The water tasted like blood to me. You get to swim in the small bay
after the trip and there is usually a pod of dolphins on the way. They took
us around to see the rear of the island and we saw flying fish which really
surprised me. All in all, a great trip. Glad I did it.

How about Michael King's Moriori: A People Rediscovered. A situation
when the Maori made another Maori tribe extinct and that within the
timeframe of imperialism so that we have a pretty good historical record
of this?

That apart from the dendroglyphs and the rare birds of course Smile

Why should I give it a miss?

There are two companies with permits to land people on White Island.
One of the boat operators is Peejay cruises, and the other is White
Island charters, IIRC. Absolutely worth the trip, although being a
geo, a volcano is a good thing.

It's also possible to do scuba dives and snorkelling on the flanks of
White Island (through the PADI shop in Whakatane), and it's well worth
the money. You can meet up with a shore tour as part of the scuba trip
if you arrange it in advance with one of the aforementioned boat
charter companies. As well as the dolphins that the previous poster
mentioned, I was lucky enough to see a sun fish. There's a deep canyon
in the sea floor between Whakatane and White Island, which allows the
fortunate to see a number of marine animals that would only normally
be seen much further out to sea.

While in Whakatane in January 2003, we stayed at White Island
Rendezvous Motel. Pleasant accomodation, and right beside the boat
jetty as well. I'd recommend it.

Peejay, that's the one! We got fed after the trip ashore. There's a webcam
on the Peejay site, but it may just be a link to the one mentioned. I recall
that when we were in the crater, a helicopter landed close by, I think it
was from Rotorua.

It's a subjective decision, isn't it? I've had people tell me that
areas are horribly boring and not to go there, and I've had the most
marvelous time when I got there because I appreciated things that they
didn't.

I haven't been to the Chathams myself but from what I hear, if you're
into the birds and the history, it's a great place to go. If you're
not as interested in the history and just want to see birds, you might
like to try getting to Kapiti Island on the west coast of the NI as a
day trip instead. But book in advance.

White Island has a famous webcam. It's a bit more interesting than you might expect, and I take a look every now and then. http://www.geonet.org.nz/whiteisland.html

My inlaws run a B&B in Te Kaha on the mainland, where White Island is
visible on the horizon and with a telescope the inside of the crater can
be seen. They see dolphins and orcas from time to time in their little
cove.

I can also recommend the drive around East Cape. Some amazing views from
roads clinging to the cliff face by their tarry fingernails. It's "Whale
Rider" country out there and every town has Maori carvings on their
halls and schools.

You also get to see the magnificent NZ "Christmas Trees" which bloom at
this time of year.

Pete, not entirely game to pronounce Whakatane in public in case it's
some sort of Kiwi joke

Totally seconded. In fact, the whole drive down the coast from
Coromandel through the Bay of Plenty and along East Cape to Napier.
Love that area.

Hee! It took me 2-3 years of living in NZ to finally start to believe
that it's not. Although I notice that every single Brit migrant I now
will only pronounce it to rhyme with "what"!
