Mel: This exact topic has been covered in this and related NGs at
least 100 times this year alone. Not to be rude (Canadians never are),
but there are extensive NG archives readily available.
The SHORT answer is that questioning and paperwork requirements for
entering, or re-entering, the USA are FAR more demanding than
forentering friendly, nearby Canada.
Good IDs are those from government agencies -- commonly a driver's
licence -- with *recent* photos and *current* addresses. These should
match the info on your vehicle's registration and insurance certificate
(lots of people forget this one!). Birth Certificates are also good.
It is important
to carry "Green" Cards and Certificates of Naturalization if they
apply.
Helpful IDs are documents or wallet cards showing employment, banking,
college or membership affiliations. US officials are also known to take
note of Voter Registration or Military Discharge papers.
Best ID is a passport, but it is NOT required for automobile travel in
either direction. (Not YET, I should say.)
IMPORTANT ADDITION: If any members of your party are citizens of another
country, they MUST carry their passports, visas and temporary addresses.
HTH and enjoy your visit!
