So, what do we all feel about the idea of being photographed and
fingerprinted by the US authorities? Personally it just strengthens my
resolve to avoid the place in future.

I think we should follow the Brazilian lead.

That is an appealing idea.
As I'm against governments keeping this sort of information, how about
a compromise. Segregate Americans at immigration, inconvenience and
humiliate them by taking Polaroid pictures and ink fingerprints, then
immediately shred them (the photos and fingerprint slips, not the
Americans), to show what respecting people's privacy is about. Oh, and
of course charge them an entry fee for the privilege!
Or am I just being mean Smile

that is what the Brazilians are doing, but they don't shred the stuff
just throw it in a box. It is not used in anyway just done to
inconvenience.

I have e-mailed the family in the States saying that after end of
September I will not be over if I have to be finger printed etc. There
does seem to be a loophole in that people entering via Canada or Mexico
will not be subject to these requirements. If that is so I can see the
passenger figures on Air Canada going up sharply.

I think you misunderstood this "loophole". Citiizens of Canada or Mexico
will not be subject to the requirements. Everyone else will, regardless of
port of entry.

What is predictable is that travel to the US will increase prior to
September Smile

Thinking about it I think I'll get a quick trip in.

Same for me. I will gladly wait with visiting the US until a sane government
gets (s)elected there.

Thanks I only saw a brief mention of it so no doubt did get the wrong
end of the stick.

Be interesting to see how the Xmas holiday bookings to places like
Florida are effected this year.

Excellent. It is the way to get through to some Americans just what is
happening to their country.

Yes, I will be doing the same with friends in the US.

I will not be visiting either..

"meant to identify travellers who have violated immigration controls,
have criminal records or belong to groups listed as terrorist organisations by
the US."

I wonder exactly just how many they have actually found?

I also understand that the delay of biometric info on passports is not
just that we can't produce them yet, but that the US doesn't have the
sytems to read them anyway? I can't recall where I read that now.

I'm not so sure that a change of government will help though.
Repressive measures are easily introduced, but they soon become the
norm and subsequent administrations tend to be reluctant to remove
them.

They may find the odd petty criminal but they will not find a terrorist
this way, their plate will be kept clean.

It will get you used to being photographed and fingerprinted by the UK
Authorities (for Blair's post-Madrid ID card, as well as new passports
from mid 2005).

Don't expect the Americans to understand UK reticence - yanks have to be
photographed and fingerprinted to get a driving licence (which is pretty
much a compulsory item), and none of them seem to complain.
