Anyone use a GPS in China? If so, what brand and mapping program (like
Worldmap). I am travelling to Guangxi province in middle of October and
plan to bike around countryside. With a GPS, I will not have to worry
about getting lost while travelling off the beaten path.

Becareful with this device, the chinese may accuse you of spying. I
think you should ask the local expats or somebody who knows the law there.

Dieter,

Thank you very much. I will check this out. Sounds like what I am looking
for and perhaps far more detail than Garmin's Worldmap CD. Thanks again.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. About the size of a cell phone,
the device has a built in map displayed on a small LCD screen that pinpoints
your location. Think of it as an electronic map that displays your
location, amongst other things. Sophisticated units can display your
altitude, barometric pressure, speed, direction of travel, etc. It does
this by triangulating on the signals from several (3-4 satellites) hovering
above the earth. They are very accurate, being able to detect your exact
point any place on the globe within a few feet. This is the same
technology used in expensive automobiles that feature larger, color displays
on a "Navigation" system. Hope this helps explain the technology. Very
useful if you get lost travelling the countryside in a foreign country or
otherwise. Here is but one of many links that explain the technology: (
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.garmin.com/aboutGPS/" target="_blank">http://www.garmin.com/aboutGPS/</a> ).

And its $27 billion dollar cost was a gift from U.S. taxpayers to the
world.

I don't think there is 'street-level' mapping of China for mapping GPS
units. You would need to sink it with a laptop database.

Units that display just latitude and longitude are cheap, it may be
useful with printed maps you carry.

I use this technology daily unlike the billions that go into foreign aid
that I never see. Besides, the technology is great for targeting our
enemies.

Don't need street-level mapping. I need high-level reference points like
major highways, towns, rivers, etc. Synchronization with a laptop is no
problem. I have carried sub-three pound notebooks to China on several
trips. I use the laptop for storing digital images, applications, access to
Internet, journal, etc.

If you are lost, where are you on a printed map that lacks coordinates?
With a GPS, tracking back on the waypoints is probably more useful.
Worldmap appears to be potentially more useful than the paper maps available
for most rural areas of Asia.

Why would you get a map w/out coordinates ?

I have not found that to be the case for myself when exploring to
unknown destinations.

I have the worldmap and find it very useful for train travel, boat and
car. Perhaps when Garmin opens up their code more street level will
come.

Actually, I think the Chinese are more interested in having me spend all my
travelers checks! Can't do that if I'm in jail.

If you come across any maps of Guangxi province, scale 1:10000 or better,
with or without coordinates, please let me know the source. I believe they
are pretty much non-existent.

If you want so fun and challenge in China with your GPS, put it to use per
geocaching.

www.geocaching.com

There are many of these geocaches in China. Plug in the country and see what
pops up for the area you are going.

You can look in your home area also and try a few before you go to see what it
is about.

You are obviously talking about the US GPS system. The Russians actually
have their own GPS satellites and here in Silicon Valley you can actually
buy handheld GPS units that have a switch to either use the US GPS
satellites or the Russian. At one point in time, the US system was limiting
the accurary of the system for security reasons while the Russians had no
such restrictions and so some people preferred the Russian system. I'm not
sure if this disparity still exists.
