Hi Charles,

Thanks for that clarification. I had no idea what he was talking
about as he said "I think MOST cabins are non smoking." and they
certainly are not in the industry.

I think it is a mistake to allow smoking on the balconies. It should be
banned. It is a nuisance to non smokers and a safety problem.

Hi Ray,

HAL does NOT offer non-smoking cabins. Please see:

Oceania is pretty specific about non-smoking. See their policy:
http://www.oceaniacruises.com/T_MainContentPage.aspx?PageUID=f8b9388d-...e-4f66-
Smoking in rooms or on verandas can cause the offender to put ashore at the
next stop and be billed for damages and/or cleaning.

Actully , I found this link on cruise critics about smoking policies of all
the cruise lines. I was suprised that so many allowed smoking in ALL the
cabins , maybe I just have been on some lines that don't . But for the
people who don't like smoke , as well as smokers who want to smoke , this is
good information . There are several lines that don't allow smoking on the
balconies , that should solve the problem for those of you who can't
tolorate the smoke.

Hi Paul,

You are correct about Oceania and the copycat, Azamara. <:+)

So I should let heroin addicts inject in my veins? Yeah, right, take your

So now you'll telling us that we should avoid the balconies on RCI &
Princess if we can't hack the smoke?
I personally think it's time that all the non smokers ban together & let the
cruise lines know our feelings so the situation can be corrected. I could
envision a lounge (with entertainment) at the rear of the ship for all
smoking.

Well , that would solve your problem . Your idea would work , too - although
it seems so much harder to get a cruise line to change it's smoking policy
than it would be to just book with one who already has a policy you like .
Maybe if you avoided the cruises with the smoking policies you don't like
just until you could get them to change you would be happier. If it mattered
that much to me , I'd cruise Disney .

The fact that you can't tolorate smoking, but book cruises on ships that
allow it , seems rather odd. You are putting yourself in a situation that
you aren't going to like , and you know that going into it , and you do it
anyway .

As far as I can tell , the choices you have are :

1) Cruise with a line that has limited smoking and have no problem.
2) Cruise with a line that allows more smoking and put up with it.
3) Cruise with a line that allows more smoking and complain about it .
4) Stay home.

Unfortunately , cruising on a ship that allows smoking , but expecting
people not to smoke just because you don't like it isn't realistic .

I do agree with you that it is unrealistic to expect people not to
smoke where it is allowed is unrealistic. But I also think in todays
society smoking should not be allowed on balconies. The cruise lines
are behind where civilized society has moved on the smoking question. I
am sure they will catch up though.

So my choice is number 5, to lobby the cruise lines to ban smoking in
all cabins, on all balconies and all lounges except for one area in one
lounge and one outside deck area. I think a policy like Oceania and
Azamara would be an acceptable compromise to most of us non-smokers.

We had a lot of cigar smokers in my family. Most of them were lawyers
and smoking cigars was fairly common in that profession, at least here
in the South.

Recently I started exploring the casinos here in Louisiana. What bothers
me the most, is the cigar smoke. I met my brother at a casino and guess
what he did? He lit up a cigar! <blech>

Tobie, we were on one cruise, where you could not smoke on the balcony,
if one of the passengers objected, but I forget which ship we were on.
The purser's desk sent them a notice to stop smoking on their balcony or
they would be asked to leave the ship.

On the Adventure, I noticed they do not allow smoking in any of the
cabins. Each cruise line has their own rules, and the rules keep
changing.

Remember when they allowed smoking in the dining room? How things have
changed.

I agree , if it cost them money to allow smoking they will stop it, and
thats sure to happen eventually . Today , however , it would cost them
money to ban smoking , as the number of smokers , and non smokers who are
less passionate about smoke free cruising are the majority. I doubt
boycotting will work , though , as the amount of people that would rather
not cruise at all than put up with some smoke is very small , and those
people still would have the option of very limited smoking on certain cruise
lines .

I'm not arguing that smoking should or should not be allowed on balconies ,
or anywhere else on the ship for that matter. What I AM saying is that if
the ship allows it , and you don't like it , the gripe is with the ship ,
not the smoker. If some old man likes his stogies , and picks a cruise
because they allow him to smoke them on his balcony , he has that right ,
and you really have no complaint with him. That might be why he picked a
balcony cabin on that specific cruise line in the first place. If people
aren't willing to take the chance that they might end up next to him , don't
get a balcony or cruise with a line that doesn't permit smoking on them .
Expecting someone NOT to smoke where smoking is allowed is just as foolish
as a smoker expecting to be able to smoke where it isn't allowed , and just
as rude .
