Hi,

I'm looking for good hike recommendations for my next trip
to Tanzania when I plan to be in the Ndutu and Ngorongoro
areas again (January/February) and anywhere in between. I'm
looking for day hikes that would give views of animals
and/or scenery and historic places.

Roger

Roger,

first thing I would want to do (and have done) is a walk through
Olduvai Gorge, preferably with an archaeologist who can explain
what it all means.

When you go there without knowing anybody, have a good look
around, because there are often some archaeology students or
scientists around. If you're lucky they aren't too busy for a
talk or even a walk.

Has anybody been there recently?

Hans-Georg,

Thanks, I was going to do that in January, but the morning
we planned to go there, we spent far too long with 2 groups of
cheetahs with cubs and ran out of time. So it is definitely
on my list for next time.

Have you done other hikes in this region?

Roger,

sorry, no.

By the way, the background image on my computer screen is a
photographic map of the area, created by artificially coloring
data gathered by the Space Shuttle radar mapping mission. So
while I write this, I see Ngorongoro Crater in the lower right
and Olduvai Gorge disappearing under my newsreader window. (Smile

A JPEG version of it in 4 : 3 format (1,600 x 1,200) can be
found at
http://michna.com/download/olduvai_gorge_shaded_relief_colored_height_...pped43.

If your computer monitor has an aspect ratio other than 4 : 3,
like the currently popular 1,280 x 1,024 (5 : 4), then don't use
this image. Instead go directly to the source (NASA) and do some
cropping and compressing. The full-resolution image is quite
large though.
