My friend and I plan to drive to Windsor (we live in Michigan).

Is there any problem bringing a laptop across the border (I assume not but
....)

Probably not. The standard when boarding a plane is you have to be able to
turn it on to demonstrate its not just a cabinet filled with something else.
So charge the battery before you leave and you should be OK.

Yes, I understood that. I meant if those were the minimum standards for
flying, crossing by car may be similar or at least be no more onerous.
