Does anyone have any experience to share regarding a Canadian leaving a
Canadian car in Florida?

Any problems around licensing (Canada or US?) insurance, customs\duties,
storage preparation under the car port?

Thank you in advance.

Bill

> 12 months

A friend of mine left a nice car in a locked garage for a year. She
came back to find corrosion in the engine and wiring damaged by
rodents. :/

Do a Google for "preparing car for long-term storage" and you'll find
numerous articles on precautions to take.

Also, check with your insurance agent, as you can get reduced coverage
(at a lower rate) when a car is in storage.

While I've never done this myself, I live in Florida and can tell you
that there should be no legal issues, provided that, if driven on a
public road, its registration and tag is current. Florida does tax
private personal property in its state; however, you would be
required to register it in Florida within ten days of the owner
either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or
establishing residency in this State.

As for the storage issues... ask a mechanic.

Correction:
Florida does ~not~ tax private personal property in its state.
You would be required to register it in Florida ~only if~ the
owner either becomes employed, places children in public
school, or establishes residency in this State.

Probably not true. They tax boats that are there for extended periods.
Probably the same with cars.

You are mistaken, my fine feathered friend.
.... http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/property/exemptions.html
"Some items of personal property are not taxable, for example,
licensed motor vehicles, boats, airplanes, trailers, trailer coaches,
and certain mobile homes as defined by law."
.... Section 1, Article VII, Florida Constitution:
"(b) Motor vehicles, boats, airplanes, trailers, trailer coaches and
mobile homes, as defined by law, shall be subject to a license tax
for their operation in the amounts and for the purposes prescribed
by law, but shall not be subject to ad valorem taxes."

Here in Minnesota, you only get 60 days.

Minnesota Statutes 168.012(g) Subd. 8: 60-day exemption for vehicle of
new resident.

The laws are implemented on a state-by-state basis. I don't have
personal knowledge of the requirements other than in Maryland, New
Jersey and Minnesota, but it's a safe bet that all states have similar
requirements; auto registration is a major revenue source.

Forget it; there isn't such a law. The feds don't write such motor
vehicle laws. Laws for how long you have to change plates are governed
by the individual states.

Here in arizona, the law is that vehicles must be registered in the state
when the owner becomes a resident and the definition for a resident
is one who works in the state, has children in school without paying
as a nonresident, is in the state for 7 months for any reason, etc.

Nothing about 3 months.

The point of the OP was I believe that he did not intend to be a
resident but would be visiting enough to keep a vehicle there. I wonder
as well what the situation is if the owner is not a resident but the
vehicle remains. In some cases it would be difficult to maintain the
registration & inspections without bringing the vehicle back to its
registration location but that is a different question.

The appropriate statute appears to be 320 with sections 37 & 38 of interest.

A quick look is that non residents do not need to change the auto
registration.
