Through incredibly bad planning I'm scheduled to fly to the US (on
KLM/Northwestern) on July 4th, which should England get through to the semi
finals of the World Cup would be the day they'll probably play Brazil. Is
there any technical reason why airlines couldn't pump live commentary onto
one of the radio channels during the game? I figure live TV would be too
much to ask.

Yes, several big technical reasons:

1. They don't have an FM radio receiver on board.
2. Even if they did, the radio signal will disappear when they get far
offshore.
3. There's no connection between this nonexistent receiver and the
in-flight a/v system, which is prerecorded.

Other than *that*, no technical reason. Razz

The pilot may give you updates (if he/she's a football fan). Technically,
there probably isn't a problem, whether or not the plane is equipped for a
live feed is another story. In the U.S., Delta's former Song division,
JetBlue, Frontier, and AirTran have satellite radio and/or tv, but I don't
know about any non U.S. domestic flights with it.

There's no coverage in the middle of the Atlantic - Only over the land and
out to sea a little ways.
