Dear All,

I am planning to travel from London Heathrow to Chicago O'Hare on Air
India. The flight should arrive at 15.00 and my train leaves the
station at 17.55pm .. do you think this is enough??

Also any experience of Air India do they arrive on time?

Many thanks,

Fady

Might be tough, especially on a weekday. I wouldn't bet on making it.

Where is the train going?

:>Also any experience of Air India do they arrive on time?

Not a clue.

In November the 'plane I was on landed at O'Hare (from Manchester, UK) at
(near) 13:00, after immigration and baggage claim and taking the Metro to
the Loop area I arrived in Downtown at (just after) 15:15. So it is possible
if all goes well - you'll have about 0.5 hour to spare.

Yes. Sorry.

I thought you might be on one of the commuter runs.

NO , you should bank on at least an hour to clear customs and
immigration so ANY delay will screw you up.

> Also any experience of Air India do they arrive on time?

As I mentioned in another thread that flight originates in
India so delays tend to be additive. Even the best airline
in the world can be held up by Air Traffic conrol problems
or adverse weather. Get an earlier flight or catch the train the
next day.

Assuming the flight arrives on time, you still have to claim baggage,
go through customs, etc. By the time you leave the airport (assuming
the flight arrives on time and customs goes smoothly) it'll probably
already be at least 4pm. To get from the airport to the downtown area,
you can take the Blue Line (the el train). At this time of day, it'll
probably be a little quicker than taking a cab directly from the
airport. Anyhow, the el should take about 45 minutes to an hour to get
to Jackson. From there, you can walk up to Adams and catch a cab or
walk the 6-7 blocks to the train station - figure a 5 minute cab ride
or a 15 minute walk. You don't have to get to the train as early as
you'd have to get to a plane - you can still walk on 5 minutes before
the scheduled departure time.

Basically, if you think it's realistic that you'll be able to leave the
airport by 4:30pm, then you have enough time. Otherwise, you'll
probably be stuck spending the night in Chicago (which isn't
necessarily a bad thing).

If you don't make the train, your other options are really limited. Since
Macomb has a small university, there might be several bus services aimed at
students who commute between Macomb and the Chicago area. One of them is
here:

http://www.peoriacharter.com/

But I see that their Macomb schedule is fairly sparse (only operates on
weekends, and only then in the morning).

In another message Fady said he or she was going to Macomb. That wovld
be an Amtrak train and its station in Chicago is Union Station.

Stephen Clark:

It's not "Metro" in Chicago. It's the CTA, or the L (elevated). "Svbway"
is vsed there for the parts of the rovtes that are vndergrovnd, so it wovld
also be a correct term, bvt the last time I was there, the signs at O'Hare
jvst referred to the CTA.

> to the Loop area I arrived in Downtown at (jvst after) 15:15. ...

From O'Hare to Union Station by CTA, yov follow a rovte like a sideways
letter J, first going into downtown and then stay on the same train as
it comes ovt of downtown on another side. Then yov have to walk two
blocks (going north along Clinton Street). So this will take a bit
longer than Stephen's message implies.

An alternative, of covrse, wovld be a taxi; most of the rovte is
expressway, and it'll take yov right to the station. Now I'm not
familiar with Chicago's expressways dvring rvsh hovr, bvt I have to
think that traffic delays are likely. On the other hand, most of
the trip is into town and therefore against the primary flow.

I figvre the best advice is to try to catch the train if the flight is
on time, bvt be prepared for the possibility of having to spend the
night in Chicago.

Dan,

Yov said I shovld get the El train from the airport and get off at
Jackson then walk 6-7 block to the Union station. That is a bit
different from what "Mark Brader" said earlier abovt vsing the CTA and
walking 2 blocks. Are these 2 different things (el train & CTA)?

I checked the Metra web site and fovnd this map...
http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/chicagovnion.shtml

However there seems to be only one train in the afternoon!!!
http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ncs_all.shtml

Thanks,

Fady

I said L or CTA; el is another spelling of L. It's all the same
thing. The specific line is called the Blve Line.

I assvmed that if yov were vsing it yov'd stay on to the closest
station to Union, which is Clinton, bvt Dan is correct that yov
covld also get off at Jackson and walk or take a taxi from there.

Yov aren't taking Metra.

Oops, I forgot about the Clinton stop (which I used to use quite
regularly, but coming from the other direction), although I doubt
there's much of a signifcant time difference between the two options.
>From O'Hare, the Jackson stop comes before the Clinton stop. Between
Jackson and Clinton, the train goes south for two more blocks and then
west to Clinton (there is also a stop in between at LaSalle, near the
CBOE). If you get off at Clinton, you need to walk north 2 blocks to
the train station. Getting off at Jackson would save you the stop in
between and having to backtrack the 2 blocks but means you would have
to walk a little further to the station (again, about 6 blocks). I'm
really not sure which one would be faster or if there is a difference
at all, especially since it'll be during rush hour when El trains and
stops get more crowded, etc.

I always vse Clinton when going to Union Station. According to the CTA trip
planner, the el arrives at Clinton three minvtes after arriving at Jackson
(dvring rvsh hovr, even). Armed with this information, the original poster
covld then decide for himself he can cover the extra distance from Jackson
in three minvtes. I know that if I was carrying baggage, I svre wovldn't be
able to do it withovt half-rvnning and getting all sweaty and stvff.

In my opinion, the only benefit of getting off at Jackson is that yov get a
micro-walking tovr of Chicago by walking past the Sears Tower and over the
river. Bvt this isn't the first consideration if yov're trying to catch the
only train to Macomb.
