Tibet is at the highest plateau on the earth with its Himalayan Peaks soaring above 8,000m. The vast empty land in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, was isolated until very recently, nourishing its own unique culture and biosphere. Tibet is remote and yet unexplored.
Lhasa, literally meaning ‘Holy Land’ is the cultural and religious center of Tibet. Lhasa’s History goes back to 7th century with the powerful monarch ‘Songtsen Gampo’ moving to Lhasa. The palace was erected at the place where there is famous Potala palace now days and Lhasa became the capital of great Tibet.
Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet, is another political, economic and religious center other than Lhasa. Shigatse has been the seat of the Panchen Lama, who is traditionally based in Tashilhunpo Monastery. Tashilhunpo is one of Tibet’s highlights and is Shigatse’s foremost attraction.
One can drive to the base of Mt Everest (Quomolangma) and explore further up on foot. Mt. Everest lies in the Tingri country of Tibet. Everest region has four peaks above 8000 meters and 38 peaks above 7000 meter, thus is reputed as the Third Pole on the Earth.
Nepal and Tibet could be planned in one go. The famous Nepal Tibet tours are Kathmandu – Lhasa overland tour and 3 nights 4 days Lhasa Tour. A road trip to Mt. Kailash of western Tibet unveils the wild empty land with occasional nomad settlements, majestic snow peaks, turquoise lakes and wildlife. One can go for 2 nights 3 days trekking around Mt. Kailash. More info is available at http://www.itournepal.com/tibet.php . Mt. Kailash is famous pilgrimage site revered by believers of four different religion, Hindus, Buddhists, Jain and Bon. Simikot trek in Nepal could be combined with road trip to Kailash Manasarover, Guge kingdom, Everest North Base Camp and Lhasa.
