Hi folks in the future I and my wife are doing a trip on the MV Van
Gogh and judging by a search on here not many people have ever posted
on this cruise ship. So hopefully I will redress the balance and do a
report.

Phil.

I hope you do.

I see you're from the U.K. Someone who doesn't pay very good
attention asked earlier if there was anyone on this ng from the U.K.
and here you are Smile

I believe the reason you don't see much on the Van Gogh is because the
regulars in this newsgroup don't waver from the run-of-the-mill mass
market brands Americans cruise on. This is their loss and an
indictment of our culture, I suppose.

Phil, although an Int'l newsgroup, RTC discussion tends to be centered
on US based ships/lines in the main. Not sure I have ever seen Van Gogh
mentioned here:(, but look forward to seeing your report.

I see you have posted in Ship-Happens; there's quite a bit been said
there about her, but it's awkward to plough through the archives and
pick it out. There are however a number of reviews in the 'Just Reviews'
section, the latest of which, last month, is quite good.

When are you sailing?

The question should be, why don't those who have sailed on MV Van Gogh post
on this board, not why those who post on this board have not mentioned this
ship. How many Europeans do post on this board? I would venture not very
many although I would certainly welcome them.

So would I. It could only improve the quality of SOME posts.

Maybe they tired of the posts from "Clint" and the "anonymous remailers".

Maybe they tired of "Cruising Chrissy" and maybe they even tired of me.

Who knows.

I would love to read observations about all the cruises we nearly never read
about in this newsgroup. The Clipper cruises, especially the Clipper Odyssey,
the river cruises, the foreign lines.

I wonder if there are lurkers reading the newsgroup who are reluctant to post
because they think many of "the core group" are uninterested. Please do post
here, please expand the horizons of this group.

It is so incredibly boring sifting through the umpteenth post about how to
smuggle a jug of booze onboard a 3-night getaway cruise booked a year in
advance, blah blah blah.

I think many would-be posters believe everyone here is interested only
in Carnival, RCI, and Princess, with maybe a smattering of interest in
Celebrity. I'd love to hear more about Deilmann's ships and river
boats, Viking River cruises, the smaller sailing ships such as Sea
Cloud and smaller ships such as Le Levant and Le Ponant. The few
reviews we've had of them have left me drop jawed and mouth watering.

This is why we need a newsgroup FAQ that is comprehensive and can give
some of these run-of-the-mill answers right off the bat to new readers
and/or posters.

I just took another look at the only thing we have
http://www.seacruisereviews.com/faq.htm , which is great for reviews,
but short on what to do after you book a cruise. It's obviously
written from a TA's point of view, and while that is helpful, it
doesn't answer all of a new cruiser's questions completely, the way a
newsgroup FAQ should. The questions we see here all the time aren't
touched on at all. They're asked so often that maybe they should be
included.

Several months ago, there was a call out to expand the present FAQ and
even add a kind of "whatever happened to ..." which I volunteered for,
since it's an area I'm interested in, and I would like to participate.
I started my research, but never heard anything more, so I don't think
updating the newsgroup FAQ ever really took off. Maybe it's time now.
All we have to do is scan this ng for the questions that come up over
and over again. It may also help us old timers here get past the same
old, same old posts.

Just a thought ...

Karen

My guess is they're more likely to be afraid of getting flamed.

Yes, all of those, and Cruise West, and P & O in Australia, barges in Europe,
etc.

Yes, P&O ... Oriana, Aurora, Adonia ...!

Yes, and that would probably cause mass lurker suicides.

I haven't noticed flames directed at cruise reviews by new posters.
I would think people who are maverick enough to cruise some of the less-cruised
ships might not worry too much about flaming, anyway. Wink

I think part of the problem may be the age of the customer, the
average age could be nearer 70. There were very few people there of my
wife and I (50ish).

We got back today after a very pleasant cruise. Eleven nights St
Petersburg and the Baltic Cities. With stops at Copenhagen, Stockholm,
Tallinn (Estonia) St Petersburg and Helsinki. Fuller report to come
later.

A lot of digital camera users present so not all technophobes.
Interesting examples on the inibility to use mobile phones at times
though while abroad Wink
