I will be driving around Greece in my camper-van, staying in
campgrounds, starting in February 2007. I would like to be by the sea,
or maybe inland sometimes.

1. Where are some nice places in Greece? Not too many people, few
tourists, good weather?

2. Is there cellphone coverage everywhere? Cell data coverage too? Wifi
spots in small towns?

3. Mostly, I would just like to experience the spirit of Greece itself,
without all of the modern additions. Where is this most possible?

4. If I remain in Greece during the summer --- where is good, not too
hot, without mosquitos?

Thank you.

Robert

The SW of Crete scores pretty well on most of your points, IMHO. I don't
know about WiFi (didn't stumble across any when in Paleochora in October,
but I wasn't looking). The Vodafone connections in the area seem pretty
good, we had a call while on the ferry sailing along a coastline largely
devoid of human habitation. You'll find many villages in the hills and
mountains where tourists are a rarity, but mozzies I can't vouch for ...

Henry.

My choice would be Lefkada.

Are you staying on the mainland or going to the islands?
My favourite and a very peaceful island is Syros and Lesbos is great
too. On the mainland check out the southern(or all) Peloponnese; the
towns of Gythio and Pilos for example, are great. Also, a neat inland
town on the mainland is Ionnina.

Hi there,

1. Crete is the biggest Greek island and has a lot to offer, very busy
places and very calm places (check out the village of Mochlos, only 100
persons living there).
2. Mobile network is available about everywhere. We only had some
problems in the Samaria gorge on Crete. You might also see that you're
connecting to an Albananian network in Kerkira or to a Turksih network
in Kos. Wifi is NOT available everywhere, only in the big cities.
3. You'll always find a place where the real Greek atmosphere is, you
need to get off the beating track and find your way there. We found
great places on the Cyclad islands (maybe difficult with camper), but
also on bigger islands like Rhodes.
4. To keep cool in summer you need to go up north. Area Thessaloniki.

To avoid mosquitos, don't visit Kerkira, that has a lot of insects
during the whole season.

We have not visited many places on the mainland, but a lot of islands.
For further info, check out our website. We have written down our
experiences for other travelers.

Try Halkidiki too. Although we go to the Kassandra peninsula, in
fact we have just rented a house there for three years, it is
considered the most touristy of the three. However, even on
Kassandra we know very quiet Greek places with lovely people.

The middle finger, Sithonia has loads of camp sites and is much
quieter and has many isolated places which gorgeous beaches and
scenery. We went for the day to VouVourous last year and adored
it, though it would be a bit quiet for us to live there it was
great for a day. Got a small little bay area all to ourselves,
beautiful clear sea and sandy beach, and only saw about three
other people all day.

The drive to the third peninsula, Mount Athos, which has limited
access also takes you to the far side of the Halkidiki palm where
there are also some nice quiet real Greek atmosphere villages.

We also like very much Chios. Quite a busy Greek island, but not
very touristy, busy with the normal workings of Greek life.
Super town and real nice beach areas, although cant remember much
about camp sites.

Wherever you go, enjoy.
