You can look the Gite de France federation web site, holiday rental all
over France

http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites

You can also check the "where to stay" heading on the tourist's
information offices web site of the town you want to stay, besides hotels
they also give references to holiday rentals.

http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites

you can also look at this holiday resort operator, for appartement rental
in many touristic regions.

http://www.pv-holidays.com/
Their Cap Esterel resort is located in a nice sea side location, not far
from Cannes, Nice, Grasse, Mougins, Ramatuelle, Saint-Topez, Eze, Saint
Paul de Vence, train des pignes and accès to Nice country mountains, not
so far too from Hyères, Marseilles, Giens.

On the atlantic coast La Rochelle is a fairly animated old harbour with
many attractions and in the center of a nice touristic region.

Those have nearly nothing in common with Club Med. You rent an appartment
and are on you own. Generally there are some organized activities for the
children. In some places you they organize group visits. I cited those
places because there you will meet people on holidays, more relaxed than
in towns, open to discussion and perhaps happy to give some help. But
they are more convenient for families than for single adults.
