I will need three rooms in a hotel in/near the Plaka form mid-October.
Something close to the Metro.
Suggestions please.
Also, do the hotels provide transportation to and from the airport?
Tours. Any suggestions as to reputable tour guides or tour companies, with
transportation
for 6 adults?

I found this guy Jordan Daiglou just great. He came highly recommended
on Greek Island Postcards http://www.greekisland.co.uk and looked
after us the whole time we were in Athens

I sounds as if you need the services of a good local travel agent. You could
try this one:

You might want to do a search online for "Athens Hotels." Some travel
sites have feedback forums so you can see the reactions of previous
customers. I won't make any specific recommendations, but there are
plenty of hotels in the Plaka area, and mid-October is the beginning
of the low season.

The kind of hotels you are looking for generally don't provide airport
transportation.

The closest Metro stations are Monastiraki, or Syntagma. The Metro
line serves the airport directly. If you have too much baggage to use
the Metro (or the airport bus), your best bet is to take a cab.

As for tours, at that time of year, it's no problem finding tours
locally, from the many tourist agencies in central Athens. In other
words, this is something that can be arranged on the spur of the
moment. I wouldn't recommend making a commitment ahead of time, sight
unseen. Talk to the people in person and see how you like them. (And
everybody in that line of work speaks English.)

You'll probably find some good information about this on www.greecetravel.com.
I've taken Matt's advice on trips to Greece in the past, and it has
been very helpful.

Past advice is right. I have found his site is woefully out of date.

Plus, he has ongoing commercial relationships (kickbacks?) that tend
to taint the objectivity of his advice. But as long as one is aware of
these things, his site is definitely worth reading. Just take some
things with a grain of salt.
