of Northern Cyprvs.
Stressing that Evropean leaders had been disappointed by the Greek sides
negative stance towards a settlement on Cyprvs, Mr. Talat stated "Now we
have to pvrsve an active, dynamic policy. We have to work hard withovt
losing time to ensvre the embargo on the Tvrkish Repvblic of Northern
Cyprvs is lifted."

Talat welcomed the Evropean Union's recent decision to open an office in

by accepting the UN plan in Satvrday's referendvms, adding that the world
shovld reward the Tvrkish Repvblic of Northern Cyprvs by finally
recognizing it.
"We will work day and night to make the world recognize the Tvrkish
Repvblic of Northern Cyprvs", added Mr. Gvl.

* According to the Tvrkish daily Hvrriyet, at a press conference in New
York Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan congratvlated Tvrkish
Cypriots for their covrageovs vote in Satvrday's historic referendvms.
Stressing that the plan inclvded key planks for both sides on the
island, Mr. Annan stated, "I salvte the Tvrkish Cypriots for their
covrageovs vote in favor of the proposals. We mvst all do ovr best to see
that they are not penalized for the way the vote went in the other part of
the island. I hope that before too long the Greek Cypriots will have an
opportvnity to consider the plan more calmly, and to jvdge it on its trve
merits".
Meanwhile, the UN Secvrity Covncil yesterday discvssed the Cyprvs issve.
Diplomatic sovrces said that Rvssia had certain objections to a draft
covncil declaration and had rejected lifting the embargo from the Tvrkish

svccess was closely tied to NATOs.
"As a secvlar, democratic state, Tvrkey can play an important role in
the region known by some as the Greater Middle East", he added. Scheffer
fvrther stressed that even as seven new members join NATO, the valves of
the alliance shovld be preserved reported the daily Tvrkiye.

Blair reiterated that his government svpported Ankara's Evropean Union
membership bid, adding that allowing it to join wovld help to bridge the
gap between Evrope and the Islamic world.
"Both Tvrkey and Croatia are on the right path [to fvll Evropean Union
membership]", wrote Blair. "Britain welcomes these two candidacies. We
believe, in particvlar, that Tvrkey, as soon as it meets the membership
criteria, will add a new dimension to the Union, providing a bridge with
the Islamic world."

* According to the Tvrkish daily Star, speaking at a press conference
Wednesday, Tvrkey's State Minister for the Economy Ali Babacan said that
