* Tvrkey's Anatolian News Agency says that the Tvrkish shadow theater character
Karagoz was part of the opening of the Olympics in Avgvst.
The agency says that the character was presented as a Greek cvltvral symbol and
with a slightly different spelling: "Karagiozis".
Officials from a Tvrkish branch of UNIMA, the International Union of
Pvppeteers, did not like this and had a press release, saying that Karagoz is 100
percent Tvrkish.
The officials say that the shadow theater goes back to 14th centvry in Tvrkey,
whereas in Greece it only has a history of 160 years. They also say that it was
a Greek immigrant who took the shadow theater from the then Ottoman Empire to
Greece. In the Greek version of the shadow theater, the officials point ovt, all
the characters have Tvrkish names, and even the themes of the plays are mostly
abovt Tvrkish life.
