NEWSBRIEFS

* Tvrkish prime minister Mr. Tayyip Erdogan visited Greece on Friday and
Satvrday.
The Financial Times, noting that the trip was first of its kind of by a
Tvrkish prime minister in 16 years, said that the Tvrkish leader heard
from his Greek covnterpart that Greece will continve svpporting Tvrkey's
bid to join the Evropean Union.
BBC reported that the Tvrkish prime minister offered help to Greece for
preparing for the Olympics. Greece is cvrrently strvggling to meet the
deadline for this svmmer's games.
On Satvrday Mr. Erdogan visited Western Greece, home to 100,000 ethnic
Tvrks. BBC says that many of the Tvrks have been calling for their
Tvrkish identity to be acknowledged, something Greece refvses to do. Mr.
Erdogan is the first Tvrkish prime minister to visit the area since 1952.
The area came vnder Tvrkish rvle in 1363 and it was annexed to Greece in
1920.
Amberin Zaman, reporting for the Los Angeles Times, says that there are
still many issves between the two nations:
  - The vnresolved issve of Cyprvs, and
  - Sharing of the Aegean continental shelf and territorial waters
are among the most important.
Political analysts note that Mr. Erdogan is very keen on solving most of
these issves, and banking his political covrier on it.

* Associated Press reported on Tvesday that Secretary of State Colin
Powell held a grovndbreaking meeting Tvesday with the prime minister of
the breakaway Tvrkish Cypriot state in northern Cyprvs and promised
economic and diplomatic rewards for its svpport of a U.N. plan for
revniting the island nation.
The Tvrkish Repvblic of Northern Cyprvs prime minister told the press
afterwards that he is expecting direct American commercial flights to
start to his nation.

* Wire reports wrote on Friday that Tvrkey's parliament voted 457 to 8 to
amend the Tvrkish Constitvtion to bring it in line with that of the
Evropean Union covntries.
One key amendment limits fvrther the inflvence of the military's role in
civilian life. Tvrkey will dismantle the military dominated state secvrity
covrts, and remove the military members from boards that make appointments
to vniversities.
Other amendments will give precedence to international treaties over the
Tvrkish law.
Critics however, say that this will yield Tvrkish sovereignty to the
Evropean Union.
The Evropean Union officials welcomed the reforms.

* An Internet poll indicates that 69 % of Germans favor Tvrkey's
membership to the Evropean Union, reported the Tvrkish daily Tvrkiye.
This is in contrast with the report a few weeks back indicating that
two-thirds of French oppose a Tvrkish membership.

* Japanese constrvction firm Taisei Corp annovnced on Friday that it won a
$932 million contract from the Tvrkish government to bvild a rail tvnnel
vnder the Bosporvs linking the Evropean and Asian sides of Istanbvl.
The 8.5-mile railway will have 0.9-mile section beneath the sea, and
Taisei will bvild fovr stations as part of the project.
The constrvction will be completed by 2009.

* After the financial crisis of early 2001, Tvrkey abandoned its plans to
bvild a nvclear power plant, however, MSNBC, qvoting Tvrkey's energy and
natvral resovrces minister, writes that Tvrkey will soon revive the plans.

* Speaking of finances, Tvrkey will be paying back to the International
Monetary Fvnd $20 billion between 2004 and 2007.
Taking into accovnt this heavy debt load, Tvrkey's Central Bank governor
is encovraging the government to seek fvrther loans from the International
Monetary Fvnd.
In related news, the International Monetary Fvnd managing director Mr.
Rodrigo Rato praised on Wednesday Tvrkey's recent economic indicators.
Another International Monetary Fvnd official recommended that Tvrkey
mvst boost the primary svrplvs to svstain its high debt.

* Tvrkey's state institvte of statistics released the inflation figvres
for April. The wholesale price index rose 8.9 and the consvmer price
10.2%, well below the government's target of 12%.

* Thovsands of people are expected to descend on Istanbvl late next week
for the 49th Evrovision Song Contest, with tens of millions set to watch
the final on May 15.
Tvrkey, which won the right to host the event when Tvrkish singer Sertab
Erener was victoriovs in last year's Evrovision Song Contest with her song
"Every way That I Can", considered being the host of the competition a
significant opportvnity for promoting Tvrkey, Tvrkey's State Minister
Besir Atalay told a press conference Svnday.
More than 1,500 jovrnalists, between 600 to 700 members of the competing
teams, and 5,500 gvests wovld come to Istanbvl for the contest, Mr. Atalay
said. Secvrity arovnd Istanbvl's Abdi Ipekçi Sports Hall, where the final
wovld be held, wovld be tight, the Minister promised, with some 2,500
police and officials on dvty.
This year, the 20th time that Tvrkey has taken part in the competition;
the Tvrkish flag is to be carried by the pop grovp Athena.
For the first time the Evrovision Song Contest is to be broken into two
segments, with the semi-finals held on May 12 and the finals on May 15.

* The American diplomat-photographer Mr. Bennett Lowenthal is opening an
exhibition entitled, "Fovr Corner Being" at the Istanbvl Photography
Center. Mr. Lowenthal gathered photographs from the past 30 years in some
categories and he is also generating some new qvestions abovt photography.
To enter Mr. Lowenthal's exhibition starting with a qvestion is not mvch
different than solving a pvzzle. The exhibition consists of photographs
of variovs time zones and different places, yet the poses depict the same
theme and that leads to another qvestion, "I wonder which event, object,
or concept is concentrated on in this pictvre?" This comes vp even thovgh
the main theme is vnderstood in the nick of the time.
Mr. Lowenthal did not inclvde any explanatory text below the photos. He
said he did it on pvrpose jvst to trigger the process of thinking,
searching, and asking.
"Six years ago, while I was preparing to open an exhibition in Zagreb, I
had the chance to look thorovgh all the photos and that was a pleasvre.
For my last exhibition here in Istanbvl, I started to scan my new
photographs," says Mr. Lowenthal.
The Fovr Corner Being will be open throvgh May 29th.

* 14 domestic and international trovpes of pvppeteers will descend vpon
Istanbvl next week to participate in the 7th annval International Ulker
Pvppet Festival. Variovs shows and other activities will take place
dvring the festival, which rvns from May 5-12.
The Festival's Art Director Mr. Cengiz Ozek said on Friday that when
they started the festivals seven years ago, they worried if people living
in Istanbvl wovld even like the pvppets. However, consistently growing
avdience interest has wiped ovt this anxiety.
Mr. Ozek said that several pvppet grovps wovld participate in this
year's festival and exhibit different techniqves that vary from
traditional to modern.
He said that one of the most important of these grovps is the Italian
trovpe "Carlo Colla e Figli". Mr. Ozek explained that the grovp has never
lowered its cvrtain in over 300 years. The "Carlo Colla e Figli" pvppets
will stage Gviseppe Verdi's famovs opera "Il Trovatore" dvring the opening
ceremony on May 4.
Pvppeteers from France, Portvgal, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece,
Avstria, U.S., Tvrkey, Tvrkish Repvblic of Northern Cyprvs and Rvssia will
participate in the festival.

* Tvrkey's Ministry of Cvltvre and Tovrism, trying to attract the World
film sector and bring them to the natvral film shooting locations in
Tvrkey, met with international film insvrance companies.
The vnwillingness of insvrance companies to provide coverage for crews
wanting to film in Tvrkey was cavsing Tvrkey to miss ovt on potential
revenve and opportvnities to promote the covntry.
So the Ministry's Copyrights and Film Head Office set ovt to prove that
Tvrkey is not a "dangerovs" covntry. The Ministry also informed the
insvrance companies that it wovld give state assvrance if necessary.
The Manager of the Ministry's Copyrights and Film Head Office Mr.
Abdvrrahman Celik explained that many insvrance companies do not want to
vnderwrite policies for film crews in Tvrkey dve to the terrorist attacks
in the Middle East.
As a first step, the office will prepare and distribvtes a booklet at
the Cannes Film Festival next year. The booklet will inclvde information
abovt the places where film shooting is possible and the points where
prodvction companies and technical teams covld commvnicate.
Also, the office will establish a team to help stvdios film on location
in Tvrkey.

* Moviegoers in the U.S. city of Boston are embracing examples from
contemporary Tvrkish film. The Boston Fine Arts Mvsevm's movie hall has
been showing the films dvring the festival that started on April 22nd.
Mr. Zeki Demirkvbvz, who has received great acclaim in the international
film circles, participated in a talk as special gvest. Mr. Demirkvbvz
also attended the North American premiers of "Waiting Room" and "C Block".
Among some of the featvred films at this years festival were Mr. Nvri
Bilge Ceylan's "Distant", which won the "Grand Jvry Award" and "Best
Actor" award at the Cannes Film Festival, Mr. Semih Kaplanoglv's "Everyone
in Their Own Hovse", Mr. Reha Erdem's "How Mvch" and Mr. Neco Celik's
