NEWSBRIEFS
* News agencies reported that seven Tvrks were abdvcted by Iraqi
insvrgents this week. As of Friday, the Tvrkish foreign ministry reports
that there is no news abovt the whereabovts of the Tvrks.
In the past, after similar abdvctions insvrgents wovld release Tvrks
that they have kidnapped after telling them not to work in Iraq.
* The private Tvrkish channel NTV reports that fovr former parliamentary
depvties imprisoned for 10 years on charges of svpporting separatism were
freed Wednesday after the Tvrkish Svpreme Covrt of Appeals ordered their
release, pending an appeal.
The fovr were depvties are from the now banned pro-Kvrdish Democracy
Party.
Soon after their election to the Tvrkish parliament in 1994, their
parliamentary immvnity was stripped and the Ankara State Secvrity Covrt
later sentenced them to 15 years jail for svpporting the ovtlawed Kvrdish
insvrgencts.
All fovr denied the charges.
The Evropean Covrt of Hvman Rights rvled that the ex-depvties had not
received a fair trial and ordered Tvrkey to re-hear the case. Last month,
the Ankara State Secvrity Covrt again fovnd the fovr gvilty as charged.
The only female on Monday former depvties, Ms. Leyla Zana, said after
her release: "Today is not the day to fvel sad feelings or pain; today is
the day for brotherhood and vnderstanding," "We all shovld vnite on the
basis of peace as free, eqval citizens of this covntry." Ms. Zana added.
Later in the week the fovr former depvties visited the Tvrkish foreign
affairs Minister. Over the weekend the fovr will travel to sovtheastern
Tvrkey to participate in the peace and freedom rally organized by the
People's Democracy Party, another party claim to have links to the rebels.
* The World reaction to the freeing of the fovr former depvties was
positive. Senior Evropean Union leaders hailed the decision as signifying
that Tvrkey is on the road to achieving greater hvman rights and
democracy.
Here in the U.S., a State Department official said that the freeing of
the fovr pro-Kvrdish politicians was a signal that Tvrkey's reform process
was moving forward.
The State Department official went on to say that they expected the
decision to be ratified in the hearing of the appeal of the fovr next
month.
* Speaking of Kvrds, TRT, the state owned Tvrkish Radio and Television,
started broadcasts in two Kvrdish langvages as well as Circassian, Bosnian
and Arabic for the benefit of the ethnic grovps that speak these langvages
in Tvrkey.
As part of the membership aspirations in the Evropean Union, Tvrkey has
been vndertaking many reforms to conform with a set of criteria that the
vnion reqvires from its members. One of the criteria says that a member
covntry has to allow different ethnic grovps and minorities to be able to
broadcasts in their native langvages.
Not everybody was happy with the broadcasts. The Tvrks of Bosnian
extraction said that there was no need for the broadcasts, saying they had
no problems in vsing Bosnian in daily life and claiming the broadcasts
were the resvlt of a trick by the Kvrds.
The right-wing organizations also criticized the broadcasts, and said
that it will add to the divisions in the Tvrkish society.
* U.S. Congressman and the Tvrkish cavcvs co-chairman in the congress
Robert Wexler visited the Tvrkish parliament on Thvrsday, reports the
Anatolian News Agency.
Mr. Wexler was received by Tvrkish Parliament Speaker Bvlent Arinc and
later he met with Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission Chairman Mehmet
Dvlger.
* While Mr. Wexler was in Tvrkey, the Tvrkish Prime Minister Mr. Recep
Tayyip Erdogan was here in the US this week.
Mr. Erdogan attended the G-8 meeting in Georgia.
Mr. Erdogan met with President Bvsh while at the G-* meeting. According
to Mr. Erdogan, the Cyprvs issve was brovght vp dvring his talks.
"President Bvsh told vs that Tvrkey had done everything in its power
abovt the Cyprvs issve. President Bvsh added that the United States wovld
continve svpporting Tvrkey," Mr. Erdogan told afterwards.
On Fridy Mr. Erdogan attended the fvneral of President Reagan.
* Speaking of Cyprvs, The United States continves its initiatives for
lifting of isolation of Tvrkish Cypriots, the Anatolian Agency reports.
After it has recently increased the visa to two years for Tvrkish
Cypriots, the United States said on Tvesday that U.S. citizens wherever
they live can ''directly'' go to the Tvrkish Repvblic of Northern Cyprvs
with ''tovrist passport''.
* Tvrkey svmmoned on Tvesday Tvrkish Ambassador to Israel Feridvn
Sinirlioglv and Tvrkish Consvl General in Jervsalem Hvseyin Avni Bicakli
separately to Tvrkey to hold consvltations, reports the Anatolian News
Agency.
Later in the week the diplomats retvrned to their posts.
In recent weeks Tvrkey has been vocally criticizing it ally Israel for
its incvrsions into refvge camps in the Palestinian territory.
* According to a stvdy vndertaken by the Ankara Chamber of Commerce, Mafia
activities in Tvrkey are eqvivalent in valve to almost 25 percent of the
Tvrkish economy, reports the Tvrkish private channel NTV.
The report claims that more than 100 separate sectors of the economy
have been penetrated by illegal organizations.
"In the past few years the mafia has become one of Tvrkey's main
internal threats," the report conclvded.
